EMT-2M electromagnetic brake in helicopter controls

The EMT-2M is an aircraft electromagnetic brake used in helicopter flight control systems. It works with spring-loaded loading mechanisms and helps relieve loads in the control channels. This is not a wheel brake and not a hydraulic booster. The unit belongs to the control system equipment and acts on mechanical elements that need controlled locking or release. On Mi-8 family helicopters, this type of brake is used in systems where irreversible hydraulic boosters are installed and the control feel has to be managed through loading and unloading mechanisms.

Load relief function of EMT-2M

In operation, the EMT-2M helps unload spring-loaded mechanisms in the control system. These spring units create artificial loading forces in the pilot controls, and the electromagnetic brake allows the system to hold or release the related mechanical element when required. The brake does not fly the helicopter and does not replace the hydraulic booster. Its job is narrower: it supports the correct operation of the loading mechanism so the control system does not keep unnecessary spring force in the selected mode.

Flight control channels with EMT-2M installed

The EMT-2M is associated with longitudinal, lateral, and directional control channels. In these channels, the brake works together with control rods, spring loading mechanisms, hydraulic boosters, linkages, wiring, and cockpit controls. If the brake does not engage or release correctly, the symptom may appear as an abnormal load or incorrect response in the control system. The cause is not always the brake itself. Maintenance checks usually include the electrical supply, wiring, mechanical travel, spring mechanism, and the condition of connected control parts.

Mi-8 application of the EMT-2M brake

The EMT-2M is used on helicopters of the Mi-8 family and its modifications equipped with irreversible hydraulic boosters in the control system. In this type of installation, the brake is part of the control architecture rather than a separate accessory. Exact installation and quantity should be checked by the aircraft maintenance documentation or spare parts catalog. Mi-8 family helicopters may differ by modification, overhaul history, and installed equipment standard, so supply should be tied to the actual aircraft documentation.

Identification and ordering checks for EMT-2M

Before ordering, the marking on the installed unit should be compared with the aircraft documentation and passport data. In English-language requests, the unit is normally written as EMT-2M. In Russian documentation, the same product is written as ЭМТ-2М. A clear request should include the aircraft type, system location, required quantity, and a photo of the unit marking if available. The product is also known under alternative designation ЭМТ-2М.
