Filters

Filters are used in aircraft fuel, oil, hydraulic, air and ventilation systems to protect onboard equipment from contamination and unstable flow conditions. In helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, filter elements and filter assemblies help remove dust, metal particles, carbon deposits, oil sludge and other contaminants before they can reach pumps, regulators, valves, engines, actuators or auxiliary units.

In maintenance practice, aircraft filters are selected by part number, system application, filtration rating, flow capacity, housing type, installation point and compatibility with the working medium. A fuel filter, oil filter or hydraulic filter may look similar in size, but still differ by filtration material, pressure rating, bypass arrangement, sealing type or approved aircraft application.

For older aircraft fleets, filter replacement is also an important part of long-term system reliability, especially where aircraft operate in dusty climates, maritime environments, high-temperature regions or intensive utility and cargo service.

Depending on the specific position, filters may be supplied as complete filter assemblies, replaceable filter elements, mesh filters, cartridge filters, screen-type elements or special-purpose filtration units. Correct selection is usually checked against technical documentation, installed sample, system pressure and required filtration parameters.
