KAU-30B combined control unit in helicopter systems

The KAU-30B is a combined hydromechanical control unit used in helicopter flight control systems. It works as a power actuator with a tracking system and helps move the controlled elements through hydraulic force. This is not a simple hydraulic cylinder. The unit remains connected to the pilot’s mechanical control linkage and at the same time can work with automatic control inputs. On Mi-8 / Mi-17 type helicopters, KAU-30B units are installed in the main rotor control system and take part in longitudinal, lateral, and collective pitch control.

Manual and combined control through KAU-30B

In manual control, the KAU-30B responds to movement from the pilot’s control levers. The movement shifts the internal spool, and hydraulic pressure assists the control linkage. In combined control mode, the unit can also respond to automatic control signals in a limited range. Technical descriptions note that KAU-30B units switch to combined mode through signal pressure supplied from GA-192T electromagnetic valves. This lets the flight control system combine pilot input with automatic correction without removing the mechanical control path.

Hydraulic and tracking system work with KAU-30B

The KAU-30B works together with hydraulic pressure lines, drain lines, control rods, bellcranks, automatic control inputs, and the connected flight control mechanism. The tracking function helps the unit follow the commanded movement rather than simply apply force in one direction. If a control channel feels abnormal or does not follow the expected movement, the actuator is only one part of the check. Maintenance work usually includes hydraulic pressure, drain back pressure, AMG-10 condition, linkage adjustment, signal pressure, and the mechanical condition of the connected control parts.

Aircraft application of the KAU-30B unit

The KAU-30B is used on Mi-8 and Mi-17 series helicopters. Open references also list KAU-30B in Mi-8/17/171/172 spare parts catalogs and describe three installed units on the helicopter: for longitudinal control, lateral control, and collective pitch control. On Mi-8 systems, the steering unit RA-60B is associated with tail rotor control, while KAU-30B units work in the main rotor control channels. Exact installation and quantity should still be checked by the aircraft parts catalog and maintenance documentation.

Identification and ordering checks for KAU-30B

Before ordering, the marking on the installed unit should be compared with the helicopter passport, spare parts catalog, or official technical documentation. The product may appear in supply documents as KAU30B, KAU 30B, KAU-30-B, or KAU30-B. In Russian documentation, the same product is written as КАУ-30Б, КАУ30Б, or КАУ 30Б. A clear request should include the helicopter type, installation channel, full designation, and a photo of the data plate if available.
