Hydraulic Valve
The GA-74M/5 is a two-position hydraulic shut-off valve with electromagnetic control. It is used in helicopter hydraulic systems to connect or disconnect hydraulic fluid supply to flight control boosters. The valve does not create pressure and does not work as a pump. It switches the hydraulic line according to the control command, so the boosters can receive fluid from the main or standby hydraulic system. On Mi-8 type installations, technical descriptions place these valves on the hydraulic panel in the main gearbox compartment.
In operation, GA-74M/5 routes hydraulic fluid between supply and return paths depending on the system command. When the valve is in the supply position, working fluid is directed to the hydraulic boosters. When the circuit is disconnected, the flow is routed back to return. This switching is used to manage booster supply in normal and standby system operation. The valve is therefore part of the hydraulic control architecture, not a simple pipe fitting or manual shut-off component.
The GA-74M/5 works in the hydraulic lines feeding the flight control boosters. It is linked with the main hydraulic system, standby hydraulic system, booster supply lines, return lines, fittings, electrical control wiring, and cockpit control logic. If a booster does not receive pressure correctly, the valve is only one possible cause. Maintenance checks usually include hydraulic pressure, fluid condition, electrical command to the electromagnet, spool movement, line blockage, and the condition of the connected booster.
The GA-74M/5 is used on Mi-8, Mi-17, and Mi-171E helicopters in hydraulic systems that supply flight control boosters. The exact installation depends on the helicopter configuration and the hydraulic panel layout. A unit from the same valve family should not be selected only by appearance, because spool configuration, control function, or aircraft documentation may differ. For supply or replacement, the installed marking and the applicable spare parts catalog should be checked first.
Before ordering, the marking on the installed valve should be compared with the aircraft maintenance manual, parts catalog, or technical description. In English-language documents, the valve may be written as GA-74M/5. In Russian documentation, the same item is written as ГА-74М/5. It is useful to provide the helicopter type, system location, full designation, and a photo of the marking if available. The product is also known under alternative designation ГА-74М/5.
