Description

PVD-6M in the aircraft air data system

The PVD-6M is a combined aircraft air pressure receiver used in pitot-static air data systems. It captures total and static air pressure from the airflow and sends these pressure signals to onboard instruments. The unit is not an indicator by itself; it works as a primary pressure source for flight instruments that calculate or display airspeed, altitude and vertical speed. Correct operation of the PVD-6M is important because inaccurate pressure input can affect several cockpit indications at the same time.

Measurement of total and static pressure

The PVD-6M receives two different pressure inputs. Total pressure is taken from the airflow facing the aircraft’s movement and is used mainly for airspeed measurement. Static pressure is taken from the surrounding air and is used by instruments such as altimeters and variometers. These pressure lines are separated and identified by color, which helps during installation and maintenance. Clean pressure channels, proper line connection and absence of blockage are essential for reliable air data indication.

PVD-6M and connected flight instruments

The PVD-6M operates with onboard instruments and systems that require air pressure input. It can be used with equipment such as US-35K airspeed indicators, VD-10K altimeters, VR-10MK variometers, and KZSP / KZSGTs systems. In this configuration, the receiver supplies the pressure data, while the connected instruments convert that input into cockpit readings or system signals. If one of these readings becomes unstable or incorrect, the pressure receiver, lines, fittings and instruments should be checked together as one system.

Anti-icing heating of the PVD-6M

The PVD-6M is equipped with an electrical heating system to reduce the risk of icing. This is important because ice formation on a pitot-static probe can block pressure openings and cause incorrect airspeed or altitude-related readings. The heater operates from the aircraft electrical supply and should be checked before operation in icing or low-temperature conditions. During inspection, technicians normally verify heater power, current consumption, insulation resistance and physical condition of the probe surface.

Aircraft application of PVD-6M

The PVD-6M is used on aircraft and helicopters equipped with compatible pitot-static systems. It is associated with platforms such as Yak-18T and other aircraft where this type of combined pressure receiver is installed according to the aircraft documentation. Exact applicability depends on the aircraft type, mounting point, pressure line layout and connected instruments. Before replacement, the receiver should be checked against the aircraft parts catalog and air data system documentation.

Installation and maintenance checks

The PVD-6M is installed in the airflow area where it can correctly receive total and static pressure. During maintenance, attention should be given to the probe body, pressure ports, line fittings, color identification, heater circuit, insulation, mounting security and signs of contamination or mechanical damage. A small blockage, incorrect line connection or failed heater can cause serious indication errors. For this reason, the receiver should be inspected together with the pressure lines and connected cockpit instruments.

Identification and documentation for PVD-6M

In technical documents and procurement requests, the unit may appear as PVD-6M or in Cyrillic as ПВД-6М. These designations normally refer to the same combined air pressure receiver type. For supply, the exact marking, condition, documentation and compatibility with the required aircraft system should be confirmed. Product passport and operational documentation are normally used to verify installation requirements, electrical heating parameters and serviceability before aircraft use.
