Description

UZR-2 device for aircraft oxygen cylinders

The UZR-2 is an aircraft shut-off and pressure-reducing device installed on oxygen cylinders used in breathing, emergency and rescue oxygen equipment. It combines two functions in one assembly: closing the oxygen cylinder when the system is not in use and reducing high cylinder pressure to a lower working pressure suitable for downstream oxygen equipment. In aviation service, the UZR-2 is used as part of portable and fixed oxygen supply systems, where compact layout and reliable pressure control are important.

Shut-off function of the UZR-2

The shut-off part of the UZR-2 keeps gaseous oxygen stored inside the cylinder under high pressure and allows the operator or system to open the supply when needed. This function is critical for portable oxygen blocks, because the cylinder must remain sealed during storage, transport and normal aircraft operation. If the shut-off element leaks, the oxygen reserve may be lost before the equipment is actually needed. For this reason, leak-tightness, valve condition and oxygen-clean assembly are key inspection points.

Pressure reduction through the UZR-2

The reducing part of the UZR-2 lowers high oxygen cylinder pressure to a safer operating level for breathing equipment or downstream regulators. In typical aviation oxygen systems, cylinder pressure may be in the 15–20 MPa range, while the reduced outlet pressure is much lower and suitable for oxygen masks, regulators or supply blocks. The exact outlet pressure depends on the modification and system documentation. The device should therefore be matched to the oxygen block, mask, regulator and aircraft oxygen system where it will be installed.

UZR-2 in BKP-2-2-210 oxygen blocks

The UZR-2 is closely associated with portable oxygen supply blocks such as BKP-2-2-210. In that assembly, the device is mounted on the neck of a 2-liter oxygen cylinder and supplies reduced oxygen pressure to the breathing line. Such blocks are used by crew members, cabin crew or maintenance personnel in emergency situations involving smoke, toxic fumes, depressurization or oxygen deficiency. The UZR-2 is not the whole oxygen block, but it is one of its main functional parts.

Main elements of the UZR-2 design

A typical UZR-type device includes a body with an internal pressure reducer, shut-off valve elements, charging connection, outlet connection and safety valve. Depending on the specific execution, additional elements may include a pressure gauge, electrical connector or remote actuation mechanism. The charging connection is used for filling the cylinder with oxygen from ground equipment. The outlet connection supplies reduced-pressure oxygen to the connected breathing or regulating equipment. The safety valve protects the low-pressure cavity from dangerous overpressure.

Installation areas for UZR-2 oxygen equipment

Oxygen blocks with UZR-2 devices may be installed in crew cabins, passenger cabins, cabin crew stations, emergency equipment cabinets, wardrobes, side niches or technical compartments depending on aircraft layout. In portable applications, the complete block is normally secured in quick-release holders so it can be removed and carried during an emergency. In fixed systems, the cylinder and UZR-2 assembly may be located behind panels, in service compartments or near oxygen distribution equipment. The exact location is defined by the aircraft equipment list and maintenance manual.

Supply and inspection of UZR-2

When ordering the UZR-2, it is important to specify whether the requirement is for the device only or for an oxygen block assembly with cylinder, mask, hose, flow indicator and documents. Before installation, technicians normally check the body, threads, charging and outlet fittings, pressure-reducing function, shut-off tightness, safety valve condition, oxygen cleanliness, storage status and passport. Since the device works with high-pressure oxygen, oil or grease contamination is unacceptable, and compatibility must be confirmed by technical documentation.
