The TB-1 is a indicating bimetal technical thermometer used for contact temperature measurement of liquids, steam, gas, oil and other compatible media. It is installed directly into pipelines, tanks, heating circuits, water-supply systems or process equipment where a local mechanical temperature reading is required. The thermometer does not need an external power supply. Temperature is shown directly on the dial by the pointer, which makes the TB-1 suitable for simple visual control during operation or maintenance.
The operating principle of the TB-1 is based on deformation of a bimetal spring. When the temperature of the measured medium changes, the bimetal element twists or bends because its two metal layers expand differently. This movement is transferred to the pointer mechanism, and the temperature value is displayed on the scale. The design is simple and reliable, but the thermometer must be selected correctly by temperature range, immersion length, connection thread and compatibility with the measured medium.
The TB-1 is usually supplied with an axial rear connection, meaning the stem and threaded fitting are located behind the dial. This layout is convenient for installation into pipeline sockets, equipment walls or protective thermowells where the dial must remain visible from the front. The immersion part should reach the zone where the temperature actually represents the medium, not only the temperature of the fitting or pipe wall. If the stem is too short or installed in a poorly washed area, the indication may be slow or inaccurate.
The TB-1 can be used with water, steam, air, oils, fuel and lubricants, provided the medium is not aggressive to the thermowell, bulb or contacting materials. Depending on execution, these materials may include stainless steel or copper alloys. For harsher media or higher pressure systems, the thermometer is often installed through a protective thermowell. This protects the sensing stem from direct mechanical and chemical exposure and allows removal of the thermometer without opening the process line in some installations.
The TB-1 is a working technical thermometer, not a laboratory reference instrument. Depending on manufacturer and execution, the accuracy class may be 1.5 or 2.5. This is normally enough for local process monitoring, heating systems, water circuits and general equipment control. For applications where exact calibration is critical, the selected model should be verified by passport data and calibration requirements. Dial diameter, scale range and installation position also affect how convenient the instrument is to read in real service conditions.
When ordering a TB-1 thermometer, the required temperature range, stem length, connection thread, case diameter and execution should be specified. The same TB-1 designation may refer to versions with different scale ranges, immersion lengths and connection fittings. It is also important to clarify whether a protective thermowell is required, especially for pressurized systems or media that can damage the sensing element. Before installation, the instrument should be checked for scale readability, pointer position, stem condition, thread integrity and passport compliance.
