DKM-1M mask for smoke and toxic gas protection

The DKM-1M is a smoke protective oxygen mask used by flight crew members in civil aircraft. It protects the respiratory system and eyes when smoke, soot, toxic gases, or combustion products appear in the cockpit or cabin area. The mask is intended for emergency use, mainly during onboard fire, smoke contamination, or situations where the crew must continue operating the aircraft while breathing from a clean oxygen source. Its design covers both breathing protection and eye protection, which is important when cockpit visibility and crew coordination must be preserved.

Crew use of the DKM-1M in emergency situations

The DKM-1M is used by pilots, flight engineers, and other crew members when smoke or harmful gases can interfere with breathing and visibility. The mask must be put on quickly, because in a real cockpit smoke event there is usually no time for slow adjustment. Once fitted, it allows the crew member to keep working with the aircraft controls, instruments, radio communication, and emergency procedures. The mask is used on passenger and transport aircraft such as Il-96-300, Tu-214, Yak-42, An-148, An-74, Il-114 and other aircraft where this type of crew protection equipment is installed.

Oxygen supply through the DKM-1M mask

The DKM-1M connects to onboard oxygen equipment through a flexible hose. Oxygen is supplied from fixed aircraft oxygen systems, oxygen supply blocks, regulators, or portable oxygen units, depending on the aircraft configuration. The mask receives oxygen at reduced working pressure and delivers it to the user through a demand-type breathing system. This means oxygen flow follows the breathing cycle instead of being supplied as an uncontrolled constant stream. The mask may work with oxygen supply blocks such as BKP-type units, including BKP-2-2-210, when approved by the aircraft documentation.

Face seal and eye protection of DKM-1M

The mask body includes a sealing facepiece that isolates the user’s eyes and breathing area from the surrounding smoke-contaminated atmosphere. This is important because combustion products irritate not only the lungs, but also the eyes. If the crew cannot see instruments, displays, checklists, or cockpit controls, breathing protection alone is not enough. The DKM-1M therefore combines an oxygen mask and protective eye area in one item. The universal-size design is adjusted on the head with straps and buckles, allowing the mask to be fitted to different crew members without changing the basic mask size.

DKM-1M connection with aircraft communication systems

The DKM-1M is designed for use while maintaining crew communication. The mask can include an aviation microphone, connected through the aircraft intercom and radio communication circuits. This allows the crew member to speak with other crew members through the aircraft intercom system and continue radio communication with air traffic control while wearing the mask. In an emergency, this is not a secondary feature. A mask that protects breathing but blocks communication would create a serious operational problem. For this reason, the microphone, connector, cable, and compatibility with the aircraft communication system must be checked together with the oxygen part.

Compatibility with headsets and crew equipment

The DKM-1M is intended to be used together with standard flight crew headgear, headsets, or soft flight helmets, depending on aircraft equipment. Its straps and buckles allow the mask to be secured without preventing the crew member from using communication equipment. In service, the fit must be checked with the actual headset or helmet used on the aircraft, not only on the table. Poor routing of straps, a badly seated face seal, or pressure on the headset can reduce comfort, sealing, or microphone position during long emergency use.

Inspection and supply of DKM-1M

For procurement or replacement, the full designation DKM-1M / ДКМ-1М should be used. The mask should be checked for condition of the face seal, transparent eye area, straps, buckles, oxygen hose, microphone connection, exhalation valve, and fittings. Rubber and sealing parts are especially important because age, storage, and exposure to heat can affect sealing quality. When ordering, it is necessary to clarify whether the mask is supplied alone or with hose, microphone, connector, storage bag, test documents, passport, or aircraft-specific accessories.
