Description

MGU-1 force gradient electromechanism for aircraft control systems

MGU-1 is an aircraft force gradient electromechanism used in flight control systems and automatic control systems of helicopters and other aircraft. The unit is a rotary-action trimming mechanism with a limited shaft rotation angle. Its function is connected with remote trimming and adjustment of control forces applied to the pilot’s controls. In practical operation, the MGU-1 changes the neutral position of the spring loading mechanism, reducing the effort that the pilot must hold on the cyclic, pedals or other control channels after a new flight attitude or control position has been set.

Trimming function of the MGU-1 mechanism

The MGU-1 operates as part of the control loading and trimming system. When the pilot presses the trim button on the control stick or pedals, the electromechanism rotates its output shaft and moves the adjustable stop of the spring loading mechanism. This shifts the neutral force point and helps relieve control loads in the new position. The mechanism is therefore used not to move the main control surfaces or rotor controls directly, but to adjust the force gradient and balance felt in the aircraft control system. This supports more comfortable and stable manual control.

MGU-1 in helicopter flight control channels

The MGU-1 can be installed in longitudinal, lateral and directional control channels, depending on the helicopter type and system layout. It is used on combat, transport and utility helicopters, including Mi-24, Mi-8 / Mi-17 and Mi-26 family applications where approved by aircraft documentation. The unit is usually located in the fuselage control system area, such as underfloor or behind-cockpit zones, near hydraulic boosters, spring loading mechanisms and mechanical control linkage. Exact installation location and linkage arrangement must be confirmed by the aircraft maintenance documentation.

Electromechanical construction of MGU-1

The MGU-1 includes a DC electric motor, reduction gearbox, electromagnetic brake clutch, electromagnetic coupling clutch and centrifugal-friction damping device. These elements allow the mechanism to rotate the output shaft through a defined angle while maintaining controlled motion and preventing unwanted movement. The unit operates from the aircraft 27 V DC electrical system. Since it is installed in the control force system, mechanical condition, clutch operation, output shaft movement, mounting security and electrical connection integrity are important during inspection and troubleshooting.

Operating role of MGU-1 with spring loading mechanisms

In the flight control system, the MGU-1 normally works together with a movable stop of the spring loading unit. By rotating its shaft, the mechanism changes the position of this stop and shifts the control force neutral. This is useful during long flight phases, changes in speed, hover, maneuvering or any condition where the pilot needs to reduce continuous hand or foot pressure on the controls. The mechanism must operate smoothly and predictably, because delayed actuation, jamming or excessive play can affect trim behavior and pilot workload.

Identification and supply of MGU-1

Before ordering MGU-1, the aircraft type, installation channel, required condition and documentation set should be confirmed. The unit may be requested for operational replacement, overhaul stock or repair support. Since it works in the flight control system, traceable documents and test records are important for acceptance. For precise supply, it is useful to clarify whether the buyer needs a new unit, storage stock or repair stock, as well as whether a product passport, certificate, electrical connection data or mounting interface details are required.
