UZ P-503B is an onboard aircraft recording unit designed for magnetic wire recording of voice communications and time code signals as part of the P-503B aircraft voice recorder system. The unit is used for automatic recording of crew voice information received from onboard intercom and radio communication systems. It operates together with the PU P-503B control panel and related installation components as part of the complete onboard wire tape recorder system.

Voice and time signal recording through UZ P-503B

The UZ P-503B performs direct recording of audio signals from the aircraft intercom system, radio communication channels and pilot-transmitted information. It records service conversations, voice signals supplied to crew headsets and time code signals used for event timing. The time code may be recorded as tone pulses, depending on the system configuration and documentation. The recorder is intended to preserve operational voice information during flight for later analysis, maintenance review or incident investigation.

Magnetic wire recording medium of UZ P-503B

The UZ P-503B uses a thin magnetic wire recording medium rather than magnetic tape or solid-state memory. Recording is performed continuously in cyclic mode, with older information overwritten as the recording cycle continues. The wire transport mechanism, wire spools, magnetic head assembly, automation circuitry, amplifier section and erase / bias generator are part of the recording unit design. This construction reflects the older generation of onboard voice recording equipment used before widespread transition to modern solid-state recorders.

UZ P-503B system composition and operation

The UZ P-503B recording unit is part of the P-503B onboard wire tape recorder system. A complete installation may include the UZ recording unit, PU control panel, installation frame, wire cassettes and associated aircraft wiring. In operation, the system receives voice and time signals from aircraft communication circuits and records them on the wire medium. The control panel provides system control, while the recording unit performs the mechanical and electrical recording process.

Aircraft installation of UZ P-503B

The UZ P-503B is installed on helicopters and other aircraft equipped with the P-503B system. On Mi-8 / Mi-17 family helicopters, the recording unit may be installed in the radio equipment compartment or on the rear cockpit wall, depending on aircraft documentation.
