Orlan-85ST is an onboard short-range VHF aircraft radio station designed for two-way simplex, preset, non-search and non-tuned radiotelephone voice communication. The system provides communication between aircraft crews and ground air traffic control services, as well as communication between aircraft in flight. It is used as part of the standard onboard radio communication equipment on civil aviation aircraft and helicopters.
The Orlan-85ST radio station supports two-way simplex voice communication in the civil aviation VHF band. It also supports simplex automated data transmission over “Ground-to-Air” and “Air-to-Ground” links in air traffic management systems, depending on aircraft configuration. The station is intended for use in international airspace and complies with ICAO requirements, including operation with the channel spacing required for European regions.
Orlan-85ST provides monitoring of the international emergency frequency 121.5 MHz on command. When a signal is present on the emergency channel, the system can provide audible and visual indication to the flight crew without interrupting the primary communication function. This allows the crew to maintain normal radio operation while also receiving emergency channel alerts when the monitoring function is active and supported by the installed configuration.
The radio station includes receiving and transmitting paths, as well as common functional units. The receiver path performs selection, amplification and conversion of the received radio-frequency signal into an audio-frequency signal for the crew communication system. The transmitter path includes modulation circuits with microphone and data inputs, followed by a power amplifier that generates the required VHF transmitter output. The system also includes control, monitoring, frequency tuning and power supply functions.
Orlan-85ST has a block-modular design. The main executive part of the radio station is installed in the aircraft radio equipment or avionics compartment, while the control panel is installed in the cockpit for crew access. The standard set includes the IZH2.000.099-05 transceiver unit, IGLM.301433.003-46 remote control panel and IZH4.137.027-01 shock-mount frame. The radio station is also integrated with the aircraft VHF antenna, aircraft intercom system, wiring and connectors.
Orlan-85ST is used on civil aviation fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. Typical application includes An-124, Tu-204-100, Il-96-300, An-140, Tu-154M, An-74TK-300D, Mi-8AMT and Mi-171 aircraft and helicopters, depending on configuration and documentation. Since onboard radio installations may differ by aircraft type, modification and modernization status, applicability should be confirmed through aircraft documentation, radio station configuration and installation records before supply or replacement.
