The MLP-23-1 is an aircraft parametric magnetic tape transport mechanism used inside protected onboard flight data recorders. It is not installed as a separate cockpit or avionics unit. The mechanism works as an internal recording assembly of protected recorder units such as ZBN-1-1 and ZBN-1-3. Its purpose is to move magnetic tape and support recording of flight parameter information received from the aircraft flight data recording system.
The main function of the MLP-23-1 is continuous recording of parametric flight information onto magnetic tape. The mechanism provides tape movement and recording operation inside the protected recorder housing. The recorded data may include flight parameters, engine operation data, equipment status and system commands depending on the aircraft recording system. After flight or after an aviation incident, the recorded tape can be used for technical analysis, operational review or investigation.
The MLP-23-1 is used as part of protected onboard recorders, including ZBN-1-1 and ZBN-1-3. In this arrangement, the protected recorder housing provides survivability and mechanical protection, while the tape transport mechanism performs the actual magnetic tape recording function. This distinction matters during procurement or repair. The MLP-23-1 is not the complete protected recorder; it is one of the internal assemblies that makes recording possible inside the ZBN unit.
The mechanism is associated with magnetic-tape-based onboard flight data recording systems used on Soviet and Russian aircraft and helicopters. It may be found in protected recorder units working with BUR-1-2 systems and MSRP-64M-5-type flight data recording equipment, depending on configuration. These systems use the protected onboard recorder to store parameter information collected from sensors and onboard systems. Exact applicability should be checked by the recorder model, aircraft documentation and equipment list.
The MLP-23-1 works with magnetic tape as the recording medium. Its condition affects tape movement, recording quality and the ability to preserve readable flight data. Mechanical wear, contamination, incorrect tape tension, drive issues or long-term storage effects can cause recording faults even if the protected recorder housing looks serviceable. During maintenance, attention should be paid to the transport path, drive operation, tape contact areas, connectors, mounting condition and compatibility with the exact recorder execution.
The MLP-23-1 is used on aircraft and helicopters equipped with protected magnetic-tape flight data recorders. It is associated with aviation equipment installed on Mi-8 / Mi-17 family helicopters and other aircraft using compatible ZBN-1-1 or ZBN-1-3 protected recorders. The mechanism itself should not be selected only by general system name. The recorder type, system version, aircraft configuration and documentation must be checked before replacement.
For procurement or repair, the full designation MLP-23-1 / МЛП-23-1 should be specified. Since this is an internal recorder mechanism, it is important to confirm whether the customer needs the mechanism only, a complete ZBN recorder, or a recorder repair kit. Before installation, the unit should be checked for marking, mechanical condition, tape path condition, drive operation, connector condition and compatibility with the protected recorder. Product passport and recorder technical documentation should be supplied where available.
