Description

HS-62 white tail navigation light on aircraft

The HS-62 is a white tail navigation light used on airplanes and helicopters to mark the rear position of the aircraft. It helps define the aircraft outline, location and direction of movement during night flight, taxiing and ground operation in reduced visibility. Unlike red and green side navigation lights, the HS-62 is installed at the rear of the aircraft and emits white light through a clear / colorless filter.

Tail position function of the HS-62 light

The main function of the HS-62 is to show the rear side of the aircraft to other crews and ground personnel. When an observer sees the white tail light, it indicates that the aircraft is moving away or that the observer is located behind it. This is important during night operations, approach, taxiing, apron movement and helicopter landing-area work. The HS-62 is not a landing light or searchlight. It is a tail position light used for aircraft visibility and orientation.

HS-62 in the aircraft navigation light system

The HS-62 works together with the red and green side navigation lights. Red marks the left side of the aircraft, green marks the right side, and white marks the rear. This light arrangement allows other pilots to understand the aircraft’s direction of movement at night. In the aircraft electrical system, the HS-62 is connected to the external navigation lighting circuit and is powered from the standard 28 V DC onboard network.

Installation area of the HS-62 tail light

The HS-62 is installed in the rear-most part of the aircraft structure, depending on aircraft type. On Mi-8, Mi-17 and Mi-171 helicopters, it may be installed on the tail boom or on the end fairing of the vertical tail structure. On Mi-24 and Mi-35 helicopters, it is placed at the tail boom / fin end to mark the rear aircraft contour. On An-family aircraft, such as An-2, An-24 and An-26, it may be installed on the vertical stabilizer fairing or in the tail cone area.

Lamp and optical design of the HS-62

The HS-62 uses a small aircraft incandescent lamp, typically SM-28-24 or SM-28-40 depending on the version. The light passes through a clear / colorless filter, producing white rear-facing illumination. The lamp base is a two-contact aviation bayonet type B15d/18. During maintenance, the lamp, contacts, filter, housing, sealing and mounting condition should be checked. A weak contact, wrong lamp type or damaged filter can reduce visibility and make the light unreliable.

Operating conditions of the HS-62

The HS-62 is designed for aircraft external installation and operation in a wide temperature range. It may be supplied in climatic versions for temperate / cold or tropical conditions, category 2 according to GOST 15150-69. Since the light is installed outside the aircraft, it must withstand vibration, weather exposure and temperature changes. Before installation or return to service, the unit should be inspected for glass condition, corrosion, contact wear, sealing and secure mounting.

Supply and inspection of HS-62

For procurement or replacement, the product should be specified as HS-62 / ХС-62, white tail navigation light. It is useful to confirm the lamp version, power rating and required climatic execution before shipment. The unit may be supplied new, from storage, repaired or serviceable depending on availability. For aviation use, passport, quality documents or acceptance documentation should be confirmed where required by the operator or maintenance organization.
