BZU-376SP-4S
Generator Protection Unit
Description
BZU-376SP-4S in aircraft AC power systems
The BZU-376SP-4S is an aircraft generator protection and control unit used in three-phase AC power supply systems of civil and military aircraft. The unit monitors generator voltage, frequency and fault conditions, and controls whether the generator may be connected to the aircraft bus. It is used in generator channels where stable 400 Hz power is required for onboard consumers. In practical aircraft maintenance, the BZU-376SP-4S is treated as part of the generator control and protection chain, working together with voltage regulators, frequency regulation equipment, current transformer blocks and bus switching units.

Generator connection logic of the BZU-376SP-4S
The BZU-376SP-4S does not allow the generator to connect to the aircraft network immediately after rotation begins. The block first checks whether the generator output voltage and frequency have reached the required range. When voltage and frequency are within the connection limits, the unit permits connection of the generator channel to the aircraft bus. This prevents unstable power from entering the onboard electrical system during start-up, transient operation or abnormal generator acceleration. For aircraft equipment designed for 200/115 V, 400 Hz power, this control logic is essential.
BZU-376SP-4S protection against voltage faults
The block monitors both overvoltage and undervoltage conditions. If generator voltage rises above the permitted limit, the BZU-376SP-4S trips the generator with a short delay, since overvoltage can quickly damage connected electrical consumers. If voltage drops below the allowed range, the block also disconnects the channel, but with a longer delay to avoid unnecessary trips from short transients. This balance is typical for aircraft power protection: the system must react quickly to dangerous faults, but it should not remove a generator from service because of a momentary disturbance.
Frequency protection by the BZU-376SP-4S unit
In an aircraft AC system, frequency is just as important as voltage. The BZU-376SP-4S controls lower and upper frequency limits and disconnects the generator when the frequency leaves the permitted range. This is especially important in systems with constant-speed drive equipment and frequency regulation blocks. If the drive or frequency regulation system fails to hold the correct speed, the generator may produce power outside the required 400 Hz range. The protection unit then removes the channel before unstable frequency affects instruments, converters, motors or other AC consumers.
Parallel generator operation with the BZU-376SP-4S
The BZU-376SP-4S is used in generator systems where parallel operation of AC generators may be required. In such a system, the block works not only with basic protection functions, but also with equipment that helps distribute and stabilize load between generator channels. This includes voltage regulation, reactive load sharing, frequency regulation and bus switching. The “P” designation is commonly associated with parallel generator operation in this equipment group. Exact parallel operation logic must still be checked against the aircraft electrical documentation, because it depends on the installed generator channel and bus system.
BZU-376SP-4S with GT40PCh and GT60PCh generators
The BZU-376SP-4S operates together with aircraft generators such as GT40PCh-6 and GT60PCh-6A, depending on the aircraft configuration. It may also work with BRN-208M7B voltage regulation units, BRCh-62BM frequency regulation equipment, MKCh-62TV electromechanisms, BTT-40P or BTT-60PM current transformer blocks, and bus switching equipment. In this chain, the generator produces power, the regulation units hold voltage and frequency, current transformers provide protection signals, and the BZU block makes protection and connection decisions for the generator channel.
Installation area of the BZU-376SP-4S
The BZU-376SP-4S is installed in aircraft electrical equipment areas, technical compartments or distribution panels, depending on aircraft type. On Il-76 family aircraft, generator control and protection equipment may be installed in electrical equipment compartments and central distribution areas associated with the primary AC system. On Tu-154 aircraft, similar generator control blocks are placed in technical areas linked with AC distribution panels. On Mi-26 helicopters, equipment of this class may be located in electrical or radio-electronic compartments and AC distribution boxes. The exact position must be checked by aircraft type and modification.
Maintenance and supply notes for BZU-376SP-4S
For replacement or procurement, the full designation BZU-376SP-4S should be used, including the series and execution. The block is made in a rigid metal housing with plug-in quick-removal connection, which allows replacement in the aircraft electrical equipment rack or panel. Before installation, the unit should be checked for connector condition, housing integrity, markings, sealing, storage condition and documentation. If a generator channel trips, the cause may be the BZU block, but it may also be the generator, voltage regulator, frequency regulator, current transformer block, contactors, wiring, bus switching unit or load circuit.
