The PNP-72-4M is a plan navigation indicator used in aircraft and helicopter flight-navigation complexes. It is a combined electromechanical cockpit instrument similar in function to an HSI — Horizontal Situation Indicator. The unit receives signals from onboard navigation sensors and systems, then converts them into movement of pointers, flags and scales on the front panel. In flight, the PNP-72-4M gives the crew a clear visual picture of heading, selected course, bearing, distance and deviation from navigation channels.

Navigation functions of the PNP-72-4M
The PNP-72-4M combines the functions of several separate instruments in one housing. It works as a heading indicator, radio magnetic indicator, distance indicator and bearing / course deviation indicator. The pilot can monitor current heading on the rotating compass card, selected course, preset track angle, bearing to a navigation station, range to the selected ground station and deviation from the required course or glide path. This makes the instrument useful during route navigation, approach and operation with radio navigation systems.
PNP-72-4M as an electromechanical HSI-type instrument
The PNP-72-4M is not a digital screen. It is an analog electromechanical indicator with internal follow-up mechanisms. Signals from navigation systems are transmitted to the instrument and displayed through moving mechanical elements. This type of design is typical for Soviet and Russian aircraft cockpits where classic navigation information is shown through precise electromechanical instruments. Because of this, correct power supply, signal compatibility and smooth operation of the moving parts are critical for reliable indication.
Displayed data and warning flags on PNP-72-4M
The instrument displays the aircraft’s current heading, selected heading, bearing to radio beacons, course deviation, glide path deviation and distance information depending on the connected systems. During approach, when connected to landing systems such as ILS or SP-50-type equipment, the instrument can show course and glide path deviation.
