PNP-72-14
plan navigation indicator
Description
PNP-72-14 in the aircraft navigation display system
The PNP-72-14 is a plan navigation indicator used as part of onboard flight and navigation equipment. It is a combined electromechanical cockpit instrument that displays navigation information in the horizontal plane and helps the crew monitor heading, selected course, bearing, range and approach deviation signals. The instrument is intended for installation in aircraft and helicopter cockpit panels where navigation data from onboard systems must be presented to the pilot in a compact visual form.

Navigation data shown by PNP-72-14
The PNP-72-14 combines several indication functions in one instrument. It displays the aircraft’s current heading, selected heading, preset track angle, bearing to a radio navigation station, deviation from the selected course, and distance data from compatible radio navigation equipment. It may also display course and glide path deviation during approach, depending on the connected onboard systems. This allows the crew to read several important navigation parameters from one cockpit unit instead of using multiple separate indicators.
PNP-72-14 as a remote electromechanical indicator
The PNP-72-14 is an electromechanical, remote-following instrument. It receives electrical signals from aircraft navigation systems and converts them into movement of scales, pointers and deviation indicators. The instrument works with AC and DC power channels and uses analog signal transmission typical for classic aircraft navigation complexes. This type of construction is widely used on Soviet and Mil-designed aircraft where cockpit navigation instruments are connected to onboard sensors and radio navigation systems through electromechanical channels.
Cockpit installation of PNP-72-14
The PNP-72-14 is installed on the flight crew instrument panel. In helicopter applications, it is positioned in the pilot’s navigation instrument zone, where the crew can monitor heading and radio navigation data during flight. On aircraft with multiple crew stations, similar plan navigation indicators may be installed for the captain, co-pilot or navigator depending on the cockpit layout. Before replacement, the exact modification must be checked against the aircraft equipment list, wiring diagram and installed flight-navigation complex.
PNP-72-14 during flight and approach
During en-route flight, the PNP-72-14 helps the crew maintain the selected course and observe deviation from the required route. When used with radio navigation equipment, the instrument can indicate bearing and range to a selected beacon or radio station. During approach, compatible systems may feed course and glide path deviation signals to the instrument, allowing the pilot to monitor lateral and vertical deviation. The exact operating logic depends on the aircraft configuration and connected navigation equipment.
Built-in control and service role of PNP-72-14
The PNP-72-14 includes functions for checking the serviceability of its main indication channels. The crew or maintenance personnel can verify the response of heading, azimuth, distance and deviation indicators according to the applicable aircraft documentation. Since the instrument is used directly in the pilot’s navigation scan, stable operation of scales and pointers is essential. Incorrect readings, sticking pointers, unstable scale movement or lighting faults should be treated as important defects.
Supply and identification of PNP-72-14
When ordering or replacing the PNP-72-14, the full designation should be used. The passport shown for the unit identifies the product as “Plan Navigation Indicator PNP-72-14” with passport reference 6D2.338.005-12 PS and serial number 0990840, year 2013. The product should be supplied and accepted together with its passport and, where required, the applicable operational spare parts kit. Before installation, the unit must be checked against the aircraft parts catalog, wiring documentation, connector type and the exact configuration of the onboard navigation system.
