The NP-96AM-2 is an axial plunger high-pressure hydraulic pump used in aircraft hydraulic systems and specialized high-pressure hydraulic installations. The pump converts mechanical rotation of the drive shaft into hydraulic energy of the working fluid flow. In aircraft service, it works as a pressure source for onboard hydraulic consumers and is installed on the engine accessory gearbox or another designated drive point. Its compact axial-plunger design allows high pressure and stable delivery in a relatively small aviation-type unit.
The main function of the NP-96AM-2 is to supply working fluid into the aircraft hydraulic system under pressure. The pump delivery is directly related to shaft speed and working displacement, so hydraulic output changes with the engine drive regime. In normal operation, the pump feeds high-pressure lines that supply control mechanisms, landing gear systems, wheel brakes and wing mechanization, depending on aircraft configuration. Since these systems are safety-critical, stable pump output is important for the correct operation of the hydraulic channel.
The NP-96AM-2 is built as an axial plunger pump. This construction is used in aviation where high specific power, compact dimensions and reliable operation at high shaft speeds are required. The plunger group creates pressure by repeated displacement of the working fluid from precision chambers. Because of this, the pump is sensitive to fluid cleanliness, correct inlet pressure, proper viscosity and absence of air in the suction line. Contamination or poor inlet conditions can quickly lead to wear, overheating, noise and unstable pressure.
The NP-96AM-2 is mounted on the accessory gearbox of aircraft engines or on related drive units, depending on the aircraft and engine configuration. The pump shaft receives rotation mechanically from the engine drive, including installations where torque is transmitted through a special drive spring or splined connection. During installation, the drive interface, flange, sealing surfaces, shaft condition and hydraulic connections must be checked carefully. Incorrect mounting can cause leakage, cavitation, drive damage or insufficient hydraulic pressure.
The NP-96AM-2 and related NP-96 family pumps are associated with hydraulic systems of Soviet-designed fighter and attack aircraft. Typical applications include MiG-23, MiG-27, MiG-29, Su-7, Su-17 and Yak-38, depending on aircraft configuration and engine installation. The pump may be mounted on accessory gearboxes of engines such as R-29, R-35 or RD-33 family units. Exact applicability must be checked by the aircraft parts catalog, engine documentation and hydraulic system diagram before procurement or replacement.
In the aircraft hydraulic system, the NP-96AM-2 supplies pressure to remote and automatic control systems, flight control boosters, aileron and stabilizer actuators, landing gear extension and retraction mechanisms, wheel braking systems and wing mechanization. On aircraft with variable-sweep wing mechanisms, the pump may also support the hydraulic circuits involved in wing sweep control, depending on the aircraft layout. Since one pump can affect several hydraulic functions, any pressure fault should be diagnosed across the full system, not only at the pump.
The NP-96AM-2 is used with aviation hydraulic fluid, commonly AMG-10 type fluid in aircraft hydraulic systems of this class. The maximum working fluid temperature and inlet pressure range must be respected to keep the pump working correctly. Low inlet pressure, air ingestion, contaminated fluid, blocked filters or excessive downstream leakage can cause unstable pump behavior and accelerated wear. Before installation or testing, the hydraulic system should be clean, properly filled and checked for correct suction and drain conditions.
For supply or replacement, the full designation NP-96AM-2 should be used. The pump may be supplied new, from storage, repaired, overhauled or tested serviceable depending on availability. Before installation, the unit should be inspected for housing condition, shaft and spline condition, flange surfaces, port threads, sealing areas, drain connection, corrosion, storage marks and internal cleanliness. For aviation use, bench testing is recommended to confirm pressure, delivery, leakage level and stable operation with the specified hydraulic fluid.
