The ECN-45B is an aircraft electric centrifugal pump designed as a compact unit combining a hydraulic pumping section and a DC electric motor. The pump is used in fuel system circuits where aviation fuel must be transferred, circulated or supplied at a stable flow rate. The pump uses a DC electric motor and operates from the standard aircraft DC power system. The electric drive allows the pump to be switched by the aircraft fuel control circuit and used only when the required fuel mode is selected. A correct voltage supply is not enough on its own: the motor must also reach the specified rotational speed and the hydraulic part must provide the required delivery. A weak motor, worn pumping section, contaminated inlet or damaged wiring can all lead to similar symptoms, so maintenance checks should cover both electrical and hydraulic parts.
In aircraft operation, pumps of this type normally work together with fuel valves, transfer lines, fuel quantity indication, cockpit switching, warning lights and automatic fuel management devices where installed.
