Fuel transfer function of the ECN-45B

The main task of the ECN-45B is to move aviation fuel through the aircraft fuel system with the required delivery rate. Depending on the aircraft layout, the pump may be used for fuel transfer between tank groups, fuel circulation, support of engine fuel feed, or pressure maintenance in a local fuel circuit. Since the pump works inside the system rather than as a separate ground unit, its performance affects the stability of fuel supply and the correct sequence of fuel usage. If delivery drops, the aircraft may show poor transfer, pressure loss or abnormal fuel system indication.

ECN-45B as an in-tank pump

The ECN-45B is designed as a submerged in-tank pump. This means the working assembly is installed directly in the fuel tank and operates in contact with aviation kerosene. Such installation reduces the length of suction lines and helps the pump receive fuel without external priming issues. At the same time, in-tank installation places higher demands on fuel cleanliness, sealing, electrical insulation and connector condition. Before installation, the unit should be checked for corrosion, storage contamination, free rotation, integrity of the outlet section and condition of the electrical connection.

Electric motor and power supply of the ECN-45B

The pump uses a DC electric motor and operates from the standard aircraft DC power system. The electric drive allows the pump to be switched by the aircraft fuel control circuit and used only when the required fuel mode is selected. A correct voltage supply is not enough on its own: the motor must also reach the specified rotational speed and the hydraulic part must provide the required delivery. A weak motor, worn pumping section, contaminated inlet or damaged wiring can all lead to similar symptoms, so maintenance checks should cover both electrical and hydraulic parts.

ECN-45B in aircraft fuel-system control

In aircraft operation, pumps of this type normally work together with fuel valves, transfer lines, fuel quantity indication, cockpit switching, warning lights and automatic fuel management devices where installed. The ECN-45B may be part of a broader system that controls fuel balance, transfer order and feed reliability. For that reason, a fault should not always be judged by the pump alone. Incorrect system behavior can also come from wiring, relay logic, fuel shut-off valves, clogged filters, damaged tank fittings or a blocked fuel line.

The ECN-45B is associated with fuel systems of civil and military aircraft, including Tu-134, Su-27 and Ka-family helicopter applications depending on configuration. The exact location and function of the pump can differ from one platform to another. On one aircraft it may be used mainly for transfer, while on another it may work in a feed or circulation circuit. Before ordering or replacing the pump, the designation ECN-45B should be checked against the aircraft parts catalog, fuel system diagram and maintenance documentation for the specific aircraft version.

It is also worth clarifying whether the required unit must be new, from storage, repaired, overhauled or tested before shipment. Since the pump is installed inside the fuel tank, cleanliness and documentation are especially important. The unit should be supplied with available passport, label or quality documents. If the pump has been stored for a long time, condition of conservation, internal cleanliness and electrical insulation should be checked before installation.
