Almaz-UP-48 in the aircraft voice warning system

Almaz-UP-48 is an onboard voice message playback unit used as the core element of the Almaz-UP aircraft voice warning system. The unit stores and reproduces pre-recorded voice warnings for the crew when aircraft systems report abnormal, dangerous or emergency conditions. It is used on helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft where the crew must receive clear speech alerts through the onboard audio system. In the passported Almaz-UP set, the playback unit is supplied together with RI-65-30 matching amplifier, RI-65-20 remote control panel and summary passport.

Playback of 48 aircraft warning messages

The Almaz-UP-48 execution is designed for up to 48 voice messages. Each message is assigned to a discrete input signal from the aircraft warning system, sensor circuit or failure contact. When the corresponding signal is activated, the unit reproduces the recorded phrase through the connected audio channels. The actual message dictionary depends on aircraft type and wiring. Typical warnings may relate to engine fire, main gearbox fire, KO-50 heater fire, engine vibration, hydraulic system failure, fuel reserve, fuel pump failure, icing or generator failure.

Automatic response to aircraft system signals

Almaz-UP-48 starts playback automatically after receiving a valid command signal from onboard systems. The unit does not diagnose the aircraft independently and does not replace the warning system. Its role is to convert an already detected event into a clear voice message. This is important in flight because the crew can hear the warning immediately in the headset or intercom channel without searching for the relevant annunciator. The standard response time for classic Almaz-UP-type logic is short, while adjustable delays may be used for selected channels where the aircraft logic requires it.

Priority logic of Almaz-UP-48 messages

The unit is intended to process warning signals by priority. Critical emergency commands, such as fire-related messages, must be played before lower-priority informational warnings. If a high-priority signal appears while another message is being reproduced, the urgent message can interrupt the less important phrase, depending on the configured aircraft logic. This priority structure is essential for aviation use. The crew must first hear the warning that requires immediate action, not a secondary message that can wait.

Memory, self-test and event logging

Almaz-UP-48 is described as an electronic playback unit using solid-state non-volatile memory for the stored phrase set. This type of memory improves reliability compared with older tape-based systems and is better suited to aircraft vibration and temperature conditions. After power-up, the unit performs an internal self-test and enters operating mode only after successful diagnostics. During flight operation, the unit can record a log of reproduced messages, allowing maintenance personnel to review which alerts were triggered and in what sequence after the flight.

Integration with RI-65 equipment

Almaz-UP-48 works as part of the Almaz-UP voice warning system together with RI-65-related control and amplification equipment. The RI-65-30 matching amplifier adapts the voice signal to the aircraft audio channels, while the RI-65-20 remote control panel is used for control, checking and service functions depending on installation. The unit is intended for pin-to-pin installation in compatible aircraft wiring, without changing existing onboard cable networks. Before replacement, connector configuration, message dictionary, audio levels and aircraft wiring documentation must be checked.

Aircraft application and supply of Almaz-UP-48

Almaz-UP-48 is used on civil and military helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, including Mi-8 / Mi-17-family helicopters and transport or passenger aircraft fitted with compatible Almaz-UP / RI-65 equipment. It may be supplied as part of a complete Almaz-UP set or as a replacement playback unit. For procurement, it is important to specify the message capacity, required dictionary, compatibility with RI-65-30 and RI-65-20 equipment, documentation, condition and warranty terms. For aircraft use, passport, storage condition and test status should be confirmed before installation.
