VR-14 is a main helicopter gearbox used in the transmission system of Mi-8MT and Mi-8MTV helicopters. The gearbox was developed on the basis of the VR-24 design and is also applied in modernization programs for Mi-8T helicopters. Its main function is to receive power from two gas turbine engines, combine the engine power flow and transmit torque to the main rotor shaft. As the central unit of the helicopter transmission, the VR-14 works under high mechanical loads during takeoff, hover, climb, cruise and landing.
The VR-14 gearbox operates with two engines and performs power summation before transmitting torque to the main rotor. This allows the helicopter to use the combined output of both powerplants through one transmission path. The gearbox reduces the high input speed from the engines to the required main rotor shaft speed through a defined gear ratio. During operation, the unit must maintain stable torque transmission, correct lubrication and reliable gear engagement under changing load. Any defect in the gearbox can affect the main rotor drive and connected transmission systems.
The VR-14 gearbox is compatible with engines of the TV3-117 family and VK-2500 series within approved aircraft configurations. It may be used with TV3-117VM, TV3-117M, TV3-117MT, VK-2500-03 and TV3-117VMA-SBM1V-03 engines, depending on helicopter modification and documentation. This compatibility makes the gearbox relevant for Mi-8MT / Mi-8MTV operation and Mi-8T modernization programs where more powerful engines and upgraded systems are installed. Applicability must still be checked by aircraft documentation, engine configuration and transmission installation records.
The VR-14 is used not only on standard Mi-8MT and Mi-8MTV helicopters, but also in modernization of Mi-8T aircraft. In such programs, the helicopter may receive more powerful engines, updated transmission elements and revised supporting systems. The main gearbox is a critical part of this upgrade path because it must transmit increased power while maintaining approved operating limits. Before installation in a modernization project, the gearbox configuration, engine compatibility, mounting interfaces, accessory drives and documentation should be confirmed against the approved modification package.
The VR-14 gearbox carries accessory equipment mounted on its drive boxes and housing. This equipment can include two SGS-40PU AC generators, two NP-92A-05 hydraulic pumps, an AK-50T air compressor, oil temperature sensors, pressure sensing equipment and chip detectors. These accessories support helicopter electrical generation, hydraulic control systems, pneumatic brake supply and gearbox condition monitoring. Because the gearbox also drives auxiliary equipment, its condition affects not only the main rotor transmission, but also connected helicopter systems that depend on gearbox-mounted drives.
The VR-14 has defined overhaul and service-life limits that allow long-term operation when maintenance requirements are followed. Time between overhaul, calendar overhaul interval and assigned service life must be tracked through the gearbox documentation. For supply or installation, the condition of the gearbox should be confirmed together with passport records, overhaul status, accessory configuration and remaining resource. Since the VR-14 is a controlled transmission unit, operational and maintenance documentation are important for acceptance, installation planning and continued airworthiness control.
