8A-1516-000 is a helicopter tail drive shaft assembly used in Mi-family transmission systems. The assembly transfers torque from the main gearbox toward the tail rotor through the intermediate gearbox and the tail gearbox. It forms the mechanical shaft line running along the tail boom and is one of the main elements of the tail rotor drive system. The complete shaft includes rigid and articulated sections, allowing the transmission to carry continuous torque while following the geometry of the helicopter structure. During operation, the assembly works under high rotational speed, torsional load and vibration typical for rotorcraft service.
The 8A-1516-000 shaft line is arranged to transmit power through several connected sections. The forward part of the system links the main gearbox with the intermediate gearbox, while the rear part transfers torque from the intermediate gearbox to the tail gearbox. From the tail gearbox, power is delivered to the tail rotor. This layout allows the helicopter to transfer power over a long tail boom while maintaining alignment through supports, flanged connections and hinged shaft elements. Stable operation of the complete shaft system is important for directional control and normal tail rotor performance.
The 8A-1516-000 assembly consists of rigid and articulated shaft sections. The articulated sections help compensate for angular deviations, structural flex and vibration in the tail boom, while rigid sections provide direct torque transmission along straight portions of the line. According to the passport composition, the assembly includes articulated sections such as 8A-1516-20 and 8A-1516-30, as well as rigid sections such as 8A-1516-40, 24-1526-060 and 24-1526-100. Each element has its own position and function, so individual sections should be selected only by part number, assembly reference and aircraft documentation.
The 8A-1516-000 tail drive shaft may be supplied with mounting hardware and accessory parts according to the passport and Z.I.P. list. The installation set can include bearing sleeves, bolts, nuts, cotter pins, securing wire and lubrication materials. These parts are not secondary details. Correct fastening, lubrication, locking and alignment influence vibration level, support loading and reliability of the shaft line. During overhaul or installation, maintenance personnel normally check the condition of flanges, fasteners, bearing supports, articulation points, lubrication areas and balance references before returning the shaft to service.
The 8A-1516-000 tail drive shaft is installed on Mi-8 family helicopters and related Mi-series platforms. Typical applicability includes Mi-8, Mi-8MT, Mi-8MTV, Mi-17, Mi-171 and Mi-14 helicopters, with additional references to Mi-171 / AMT and Mi-8MTV / Mi-172 configurations depending on installed transmission system and documentation. Because helicopters may differ by modification, overhaul history, service bulletins and transmission configuration, applicability should be checked by the aircraft parts catalog, factory passport and current maintenance documentation before supply or installation.
The shaft assembly may be referenced under several designations, including 8A-1516-000, 8А-1516-000 and 8A1516-000. It may also be linked with RSh1600-00 under approved service instructions and modification requirements. This interchangeability should not be assumed by designation alone. The applicable bulletin, modification status, shaft composition, mounting kit, lubrication requirements and aircraft configuration must be verified. For correct ordering, it is useful to specify the helicopter type, required condition, passport availability, Z.I.P. completeness and whether the request is for the complete shaft assembly or for individual sections.
