Flight Data Recorder
Available on back-order
The ZBN-1-3 Series 3 is a protected onboard solid-state flight data recorder designed for accumulation and preservation of aircraft flight parameter information. It operates as a crash-protected memory unit within onboard flight data recording systems and stores processed parametric data for post-flight analysis, operational monitoring and investigation of aviation incidents. Unlike older magnetic-tape recorders, the ZBN-1-3 Series 3 uses solid-state memory, which removes the tape transport mechanism and improves reliability in regular aircraft operation.
The main function of the ZBN-1-3 Series 3 is continuous recording and preservation of processed flight parameter data. The recorder stores information related to aircraft systems, flight conditions, engine operation and equipment status depending on the connected recording system. It is active throughout aircraft operation, including start-up, taxiing, takeoff, cruise, maneuvering, descent and shutdown. The unit keeps the last protected flight data archive for later extraction and analysis using approved ground equipment.
The ZBN-1-3 Series 3 is built to preserve recorded information under severe accident conditions. The recorder is designed to withstand high shock loads, static compression, fire exposure, immersion in sea water, fuel and extinguishing fluids. This is the core reason for using a protected recorder instead of a normal memory block. In an incident investigation, the value of the unit depends on whether the stored data can survive mechanical and thermal damage and then be read out correctly.
The Series 3 version uses a solid-state recording medium rather than magnetic tape. This makes it suitable for replacing earlier recorder versions where approved by the aircraft documentation. The absence of a tape transport mechanism reduces mechanical wear and removes many faults typical for older magnetic-tape systems. At the same time, compatibility is not defined by memory type alone. The recorder must match the aircraft recording system, power supply, data format, wiring, mounting and approved equipment list.
The ZBN-1-3 Series 3 can replace earlier protected recorder units such as ZBN-1-1, ZBN-1-3 and ZBN-1-3 Series 2 according to supplied reference data. It may also replace MLP-14-5 with BlPK-1 where the approved system configuration allows it. This replacement capability is useful for modernization of aircraft originally equipped with magnetic-tape recorders. Before supply, it is still necessary to confirm the target aircraft, recorder system, connector arrangement and whether replacement is allowed without changes to aircraft wiring.
The ZBN-1-3 Series 3 is used on fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters equipped with compatible flight data recording systems. It is associated with Tu-134, Tu-154, Tu-154M, Tu-204, Il-62M, Il-76, Il-86, Il-96, Il-114, Yak-42, An-28, An-74, Mi-8, Mi-26T, Ka-32, Tu-214, Tu-334 and Be-200 platforms depending on configuration. It is also commonly referenced for Mi-8 / Mi-17 family helicopters, including Mi-171E, in systems such as MSRP-64M-5 or BUR-1-2.
Recorded data from the ZBN-1-3 Series 3 can be read out using an IBM-PC or notebook through a USB–RS-422 adapter. The recorder supports high-speed data transfer for maintenance and analysis. It works with data processing systems such as Topaz-M, PS-90 and equivalent equipment. This matters in service because a recorder may be physically serviceable, but data extraction still requires the correct interface, software, decoding tools and system documentation.
For procurement or replacement, the full designation ZBN-1-3 Series 3 should be specified. The aircraft type, recording system, required documentation and replacement target should also be confirmed. Before installation, the unit should be checked for housing condition, connector integrity, markings, sealing, mounting compatibility, power-up readiness and data readout capability. For aviation use, product passport, acceptance documents and certificate / airworthiness documentation should be confirmed where available.
