Parametric magnetic tape unit
The MLP-23-3 is a parametric magnetic tape recording unit used inside protected onboard flight data recorders. It is designed for recording and storage of flight parameter information in aircraft and helicopter recording systems that use magnetic tape technology. The unit is not used as a standalone aircraft instrument. It works as an internal recording assembly of the protected recorder, where it provides tape movement, recording and storage of parametric flight data.
The main task of the MLP-23-3 is to record flight information onto magnetic tape. The recorded data may include flight parameters, engine operating data, control inputs, system states and discrete events depending on the aircraft recording system. After flight, this information can be read out and processed by ground analysis equipment. In the event of an incident, the data stored on the tape may be used for technical review and investigation, provided that the recorder and tape mechanism remain serviceable.
The MLP-23-3 is associated with protected onboard recorders such as ZBN-1-3 Series 2. In this configuration, the protected recorder housing provides mechanical and environmental protection, while the MLP-23-3 performs the actual magnetic tape recording function. This distinction is important for procurement and repair. MLP-23-3 is not the complete protected recorder. It is the internal tape transport and recording unit that forms the working recording section of the ZBN recorder.
The MLP-23-3 may be used in magnetic-tape-based flight data recording systems such as BUR-1, BUR-3, MSRP-A-01 and MSRP-A-02, depending on the aircraft configuration and recorder type. These systems were installed on various Soviet and Russian aircraft and helicopters, including Il-76, An-74, Tu-154 and Mi-8 / Mi-17 family helicopters. Exact applicability should be checked by the recorder model, system documentation and aircraft equipment list before replacement.
The MLP-23-3 uses magnetic tape as the recording medium. Because of this, its condition depends not only on electronics, but also on the mechanical tape path. Tape movement, drive stability, tension, guides, contact areas and cleanliness all affect recording quality. A unit may appear complete externally but still produce poor or unreadable data if the tape transport mechanism is worn, contaminated, incorrectly adjusted or affected by long-term storage. For this reason, bench inspection is important before return to service.
Information recorded through the MLP-23-3 is normally transferred to ground analysis equipment using specialized readout devices. References include mobile data transfer or readout equipment such as MVD-23, as well as ground decoding and processing stations depending on the system. The tape unit itself stores the information, but the data becomes useful only after correct playback, decoding and analysis. Compatibility between the tape unit, recorder, readout equipment and recording format should be confirmed.
Aircraft recorders using magnetic tape mechanisms such as MLP-23-3 may be replaced during modernization by solid-state recording units, where this is approved by aircraft documentation. Examples include ZBN-1-3 Series 3 or TBNK-type solid-state recorders depending on the system. Such replacement can reduce maintenance related to tape transport mechanisms. However, interchangeability should never be assumed only by general recorder name. Mounting, wiring, recording format, system approval and documentation must be checked.
For procurement or repair, the full designation MLP-23-3 / МЛП-23-3 should be specified. It is also important to clarify whether the customer needs the magnetic tape unit itself, a complete ZBN-1-3 Series 2 recorder, repair service or replacement with a solid-state recorder. Before installation, the unit should be checked for marking, tape path condition, drive operation, connector condition, mechanical wear, contamination and compatibility with the protected recorder. Product passport and operational documentation should be confirmed where available.
