electronic module
The M11A is an aircraft electronic module used in onboard aviation equipment installed on helicopters and other aircraft. It operates as a signal matching and conversion unit in flight data recording systems. The module is not a standalone recorder and does not store flight data by itself. Its task is to prepare weak sensor signals for further processing and recording by onboard flight data acquisition equipment.
The M11A is a DC amplifier / signal conditioning module. It amplifies low-level electrical signals coming from temperature sensors, mainly chromel-alumel thermocouples used for measuring turbine gas temperature. The module brings the thermocouple signal to the level required by the flight data acquisition unit. This allows the aircraft recorder system to receive a stable, normalized signal instead of a weak raw thermoelectric voltage from the sensor.
A key function of the M11A module is compensation of the thermocouple cold junction. Thermocouple signals depend not only on the measured gas temperature, but also on the temperature at the reference junction. The M11A corrects this effect and helps provide a usable signal for the onboard recording system. It also matches signal levels between temperature sensors and data acquisition units, reducing the risk of incorrect recording caused by signal mismatch.
The M11A is used in onboard flight data recording systems such as BUR-1-2Zh, BUR-SL-1, Tester-M and related equipment configurations. The amplified and normalized signal is sent to flight information acquisition and conversion units, such as BSPI-type blocks, where it can be processed and then recorded by protected onboard memory units. In this signal chain, the M11A works between the primary temperature sensor and the aircraft recorder electronics.
The M11A module is applied on helicopters of the Mi-8 family, including Mi-8 and Mi-171 configurations, and may also be used on other aircraft types such as Mi-26, An-124 and M-101T depending on equipment fit. On helicopters, the module is typically installed in equipment bays, instrument compartments or cargo cabin areas according to the aircraft installation documentation. In many systems, two modules may be installed — one for each engine channel.
Structurally, the M11A is manufactured as a compact electronic module in a metal shielded housing. The housing protects the signal-conditioning circuits from electromagnetic interference and mechanical influence. The module is designed for operation from the aircraft 27 V DC power network and uses a small cylindrical connector, commonly of the RM27 type, depending on configuration. During maintenance, connector condition, housing integrity, mounting security and wiring compatibility should be checked.
For procurement, the designation M11A should be clearly specified. In Russian documentation, the same product may be written as М11А. The module may also be described as a two-channel aircraft DC normalizing amplifier for thermocouple signals. Before supply or replacement, it is important to confirm the technical specification, aircraft type, flight data recording system, connected sensors, output signal range and required documentation. Applicability should always be checked against aircraft and recorder-system documentation.
