Warning indication function of TS-5M-1

The TS-5M-1 displays a red illuminated inscription when the corresponding aircraft system sends a signal to the annunciator circuit. Red indication is normally used for emergency or critical warnings. Typical messages may relate to fire, engine failure, fuel draining, system failure or other urgent conditions, depending on the aircraft wiring and engraved inscription. The annunciator itself does not detect a fault. It only displays the warning command received from the connected system.

TS-5M-1 in cockpit warning systems

The annunciator is used as part of aircraft cockpit warning and indication systems. It can be installed on central instrument panels, overhead electrical panels, side consoles and crew-specific control boards. On large aircraft and helicopters, several TS-5M Series annunciators may be mounted together in groups or matrices, forming a light-signalling block. This allows the crew to monitor multiple systems from one visible panel area.

Red filter and lamp arrangement of TS-5M-1

The TS-5M-1 uses a red filter, identified by the index “1” in the designation. The light source is an aircraft miniature incandescent lamp such as SM-28-1.4-1 or SM-28-4.8-1, depending on execution and documentation. The lamp illuminates the inscription through the filter, creating a red warning message. During maintenance, the lamp, contacts, filter, inscription plate, housing and fastening elements should be checked.

TS-5M annunciator color modifications

The TS-5M Series includes several color versions for different signal priorities and aircraft logic. TS-5M-1 is red, TS-5M-2 is yellow, TS-5M-3 is green, TS-5M-4 is white and TS-5M-5 is blue. The color must match the aircraft documentation because it reflects the meaning of the signal. A red TS-5M-1 should not be replaced by another color version unless the aircraft documentation specifically allows that change.

Aircraft application of TS-5M-1

The TS-5M-1 is widely used in Soviet and Russian civil and military aircraft and helicopters. It can be found on aircraft such as Su-27, MiG-29, Tu-154 and Il-76, as well as on helicopters including Mi-8 / Mi-171, Mi-24, Ka-52 and Ka-32 depending on configuration. Exact inscriptions, quantity and installation points vary by aircraft type, modification and cockpit layout.

Installation of TS-5M-1 on panels and consoles

The annunciator is normally installed flush into rectangular cut-outs in instrument panels or control consoles. Fixing is performed with screws or panel hardware according to the specific installation. Typical locations include central instrument boards in front of the pilots, overhead panels controlling fuel, hydraulic and fire-protection systems, and side panels at navigator, flight engineer or operator stations. The unit should be installed so that the warning text remains clearly visible to the responsible crew member.

For procurement, the annunciator should be specified as TS-5M-1 / TS-5M-1, with the required inscription and lamp version confirmed in advance. If the request concerns a replacement unit, it is useful to provide a photo of the installed annunciator or the exact text displayed on the filter. Before installation, the unit should be checked for lamp operation, brightness, filter condition, inscription readability, contact condition, housing integrity and mounting compatibility.
