Local lighting function of the SM-1BM

The main task of the SM-1BM is to provide additional light where general cabin lighting is not enough or where the crew needs a dedicated working light. It may be used during night operation, long flights, cockpit preparation, maintenance access or work with charts and documents. The light is not an external navigation or signal lamp. It belongs to onboard internal lighting equipment and is used inside the aircraft.

SM-1BM and SM-1B modification

The SM-1BM is a common modification of the SM-1B onboard aircraft light. In supply and technical documents, both designations may appear depending on production batch, installed version and acceptance category. When ordering, the exact designation should be checked from the installed unit, aircraft documentation or spare parts catalog. A related version, SM-1KM, may also be encountered, but it is normally associated with a red filter and is used for different cockpit lighting tasks.

White filter and operating mode of SM-1BM

The SM-1BM is supplied with a white light filter. This makes it suitable for normal local illumination, reading and service work inside the cabin. The unit operates from a 27 V onboard power supply with ±10% tolerance. Continuous operation is limited, with reference data listing up to 8 hours. Because this is a small aircraft light, correct voltage, lamp condition and wiring integrity are important for stable operation and avoiding overheating.

Wire versions: MGShV and BPGRL

The SM-1BM may be manufactured with different wire types. MGShV wire is used for internal and inter-block electrical connections in radio-electronic equipment. BPGRL is a flexible onboard wire with rubber insulation and braided polyester thread covering. Both wire types are intended for demanding service conditions and are resistant to environmental and mechanical influences typical for onboard equipment installations.

Environmental resistance of SM-1BM wiring

MGShV and BPGRL wires are resistant to salt fog, solar radiation, dust, atmospheric precipitation, mold fungi, mineral oils, gasoline and kerosene. They are also designed to withstand sinusoidal vibration, mechanical shocks, linear acceleration and acoustic noise. This matters for aviation applications because the light and its wiring may be installed in areas exposed to vibration, fuel vapors, service contamination and temperature changes.

Acceptance versions of SM-1BM

The SM-1BM may be supplied in several acceptance versions depending on customer and quality-control requirements. These may include OTK technical control acceptance, OS / OSS especially stable versions, PZ customer acceptance and VP military acceptance. The exact version should be stated in the request when documentation or acceptance category is important. For aircraft supply, acceptance type can be as important as the light designation itself.

Supply and inspection of SM-1BM

For procurement, the product should be specified as SM-1BM / SM-1BM, with wire type and acceptance category confirmed in advance. It is also useful to confirm whether the required version uses MGShV or BPGRL wire. Before installation, the light should be checked for filter condition, wiring, insulation, contacts, housing, mounting and correct operation at 27 V. For aviation use, product passport, label, quality documents or acceptance records should be confirmed where required.
