Description

SBK cockpit lighting unit for crew work areas

The SBK is an aircraft cockpit lighting unit designed to illuminate the crew’s working area, including the map board, instrument panel and control equipment. It is used in airplanes and helicopters where local cockpit lighting is required during flight preparation, night operation and instrument monitoring. The unit provides controlled lighting for tasks that require clear visibility without overloading the cockpit with excessive brightness.

White and red lighting modes of the SBK unit

The SBK provides two lighting modes: white and red. White light is used for reading documents, maps, checklists and cockpit markings. Red light is used when the crew needs to preserve night vision while still seeing the working area. This makes the unit suitable for night flights, low-light cockpit work and situations where external visibility must not be disturbed by bright cabin lighting. The filter arrangement allows the same unit to serve different cockpit lighting tasks.

SBK in cockpit and instrument panel lighting systems

The SBK works as part of the aircraft internal lighting system. It may be used to illuminate the map board, instrument panel, control equipment and other local cockpit zones. In some aircraft layouts, it can also serve as a backup light source if the primary lighting system fails. This role is useful because the crew must still be able to read instruments and operate controls if main panel illumination becomes unavailable.

Electrical operation of the SBK light

The SBK is powered from the aircraft 27 V DC electrical system. The unit incorporates a regulated supply range and is able to maintain operation as voltage decreases within the specified limits. If the voltage drops below the protection threshold, the lamp is automatically switched off. This protects the lamp and helps prevent abnormal operation under poor power-supply conditions. During maintenance, the voltage supply, lamp, contacts, switch operation and wiring should be checked.

Lamp and filter design of the SBK unit

The SBK uses a CM 28-4.8 lamp and red / white filter arrangement. The lamp provides the light source, while the filters form the required lighting color for the selected mode. Since cockpit lighting must be reliable and predictable, the condition of the lamp, filters, contacts and housing is important. A weak lamp, dirty filter, damaged contact or unstable voltage can reduce illumination quality and make cockpit work less comfortable.

Operating conditions of the SBK cockpit light

The SBK is designed for operation in aircraft cockpit environments over a broad temperature range. It can be used in normal cockpit conditions as well as in colder or warmer operating environments depending on aircraft type. The unit should be checked for secure mounting, housing condition, filter condition and reliable electrical operation before installation. Exact mounting points and connection details should be verified by the aircraft cockpit lighting documentation.

Supply and inspection of SBK

For procurement or replacement, the unit should be specified as SBK cockpit lighting unit. It is useful to confirm the required lamp type, filter colors, condition and documentation before shipment. The unit may be supplied new, from storage, repaired or serviceable depending on availability. For aircraft use, manufacturer passport, operational instructions, test documents or quality documents should be confirmed where required.
