MSL-3 in the aircraft external lighting system
The MSL-3 is an aircraft rotating beacon light used for visual identification of airplanes and helicopters in flight and during ground operation. It is part of the external lighting system and produces flashing circular light signals that make the aircraft more visible to other traffic, ground personnel and nearby aircraft. The beacon is especially important at night, in poor visibility, during taxiing, engine operation, takeoff, landing and flight in controlled airspace.

Aircraft visibility function of the MSL-3 beacon
The main purpose of the MSL-3 is to mark the aircraft with a clearly visible flashing light. The beacon improves recognition of the aircraft position and movement direction, reducing the risk of visual conflict during low-light operation. In typical installations, upper and lower beacon positions may be used to provide visibility from different directions. The upper beacon helps other aircraft see the helicopter or airplane from above and around, while the lower beacon improves visibility from the ground and for aircraft flying below.
Rotating light mechanism of the MSL-3
Inside the MSL-3 housing, a DC electric motor drives the rotating mechanism through a worm gearbox. The rotating platform with lamps, or the reflector system depending on modification, converts the continuous lamp light into intermittent circular flashes. This gives the beacon its characteristic flashing effect. Flash frequency can be adjusted by the built-in resistor or potentiometer in the motor circuit. During service, the drive motor, worm gear, rotating platform, bearings and electrical circuit should be checked for smooth and stable operation.
MSL-3 lamps and light filter dome
The MSL-3 uses aircraft lamps such as SM3 28-60, depending on the exact modification. Some modernized versions, including MSL-3M variants, may use brighter halogen lamps and additional protection equipment. The beacon is covered by a protective glass light-filter dome, usually red or white depending on installation and aircraft lighting requirements. The dome protects the internal parts and forms the required visual signal color. Cracks, darkening, overheating marks or loose installation of the dome can reduce visibility and should be checked during maintenance.
Upper and lower installation positions of MSL-3
MSL-3 beacons are installed in positions that provide maximum circular visibility. Aircraft may use one or two units, usually an upper and a lower beacon. On fixed-wing aircraft, the upper beacon may be installed on the vertical stabilizer or on the upper fuselage behind the cockpit. On helicopters such as Mi-8 or Mi-26, the unit may be installed on the tail boom end area or on the upper fuselage in a zone not blocked by the main rotor. The lower beacon is typically installed on the lower fuselage skin, directed downward.
Operating limits and ground use of MSL-3
The MSL-3 is designed for airborne operation with airflow cooling. On the ground, continuous operation may be limited because the lamp and light-filter dome can overheat without airflow. According to the supplied technical description, ground operation without airflow should not exceed 5 minutes. This limitation is important during maintenance checks, preflight testing and ground handling. If the beacon is left on too long while stationary, the light-filter dome, lamp, wiring or internal parts may suffer heat damage.
MSL-3 modifications and replacement notes
The MSL-3 family includes several variants, such as MSL-3-2S and modernized MSL-3M / MSL-3M-2S versions. The MSL-3-2S is a classic configuration that may be supplied with different color light filters. Modernized versions may include halogen lamps and a special protection block. These variants should not be treated as automatically identical without checking the aircraft documentation. Differences may include lamps, wiring, protection circuit, light output, color filter and installation requirements.
