The FPP-7 is an aircraft landing and search light used as part of external lighting equipment on helicopters and other compatible aircraft. It provides powerful forward and downward illumination during takeoff, landing, taxiing and search operations in darkness or reduced visibility. The light is intended for situations where the crew needs to see the runway, landing zone, field site, search area or surface below the aircraft. On early Mi-8 / Mi-17 helicopter series, the FPP-7 was used before the later FPP-7M version became common.
During landing or approach, the FPP-7 helps illuminate the runway, landing site or selected touchdown area. Its concentrated high-intensity beam gives the crew better visual reference when operating at night, on poorly lit airfields, or in field conditions where ground lighting may be absent. This is important for helicopter operations because landings can take place not only on prepared runways, but also on temporary sites, rescue areas, unprepared surfaces or remote operating locations. The light supports safe visual assessment of the surface before touchdown.
The FPP-7 is not limited to standard landing illumination. It can also be used during search, rescue, evacuation, cargo handling and field operations where surface lighting is required beneath or ahead of the aircraft. The beam helps the crew and ground team identify objects, terrain, personnel, equipment and landing obstacles in low-light conditions. In this role, the unit works as a practical search and operating-area light, especially on helicopters that perform transport, utility or mission support tasks away from normal airfield infrastructure.
The FPP-7 includes a mechanical beam adjustment drive that changes the vertical angle of the light. This allows the beam to be directed according to the flight or ground operation task: farther ahead during approach, lower toward the surface during landing or search use, and adjusted as required during taxiing. Compared with the later FPP-7M, the baseline FPP-7 has a more limited motion range and service life, but it remains suitable for aircraft configurations where this version is approved and supported by documentation.
The FPP-7 connects to the aircraft’s 27 V DC power bus. The unit is designed for intermittent or cyclic operation, which is typical for high-power external lights used during limited phases of flight or ground movement. Power consumption is relatively high for this class of lighting equipment, so the condition of the aircraft wiring, switches, connectors and power supply circuit matters. If the light operates weakly, intermittently or does not move correctly, both the lamp circuit and the adjustment-drive circuit should be checked.
The FPP-7 light assembly includes the housing, reflector, lens and beam adjustment mechanism. During operation, the unit is exposed to vibration, temperature changes, airflow, moisture, dust and mechanical stresses typical for rotorcraft service. Inspection should include the lens surface, reflector condition, housing, mounting points, electrical terminals, drive mechanism and signs of corrosion or overheating. Since the light is mounted externally, damage from ground debris, handling or long-term storage should also be checked before installation.
The FPP-7 is the baseline predecessor to the improved FPP-7M model. Although both units belong to the same landing/search light family, they should not be treated as automatically interchangeable without checking the aircraft documentation.
