The PP-5MD1 is the transmitter–receiver unit of the modernized RV-5MD1 radio altimeter system. It is designed for continuous measurement of true aircraft height above ground or water during flight. The unit is the core functional element of the RV-5MD1 set: it generates, transmits, receives and processes microwave signals used to determine actual clearance below the aircraft during low-altitude operation.
In the RV-5MD1 system, the PP-5MD1 forms the probing microwave signal and sends it to the external antenna path. The reflected signal returns from the ground or water surface and is received through the antenna system. The transceiver then processes the received signal and forms altitude data for cockpit instrumentation and connected onboard systems. This makes the PP-5MD1 the main electronic block responsible for signal generation, reception and altitude information formation.
The PP-5MD1 performs several functions inside the RV-5MD1 radio altimeter system. It transmits frequency-modulated probing signals, receives and processes reflected signals, computes real altitude in real time and supports output of Danger Height alerts. The unit also provides Failure / OK status outputs and built-in health monitoring with reference-height test. These functions allow the crew and onboard equipment to monitor both radio altitude and the operating condition of the radio altimeter.
A complete RV-5MD1 installation typically includes the PP-5MD1 transceiver, AR5-1 antennas, UV-5M altitude indicator, RA-5 shock-mount frame and interconnecting cables. The antennas provide transmission and reception of microwave energy, the PP-5MD1 processes the signal, and the UV-5M indicator displays radio height in the cockpit. The transceiver is mounted on the RA-5 frame and connected to aircraft wiring according to the approved installation documentation.
The PP-5MD1 supports Danger Height output for warning when the aircraft descends below the selected threshold. It also generates Failure / OK indication used by crew systems and connected equipment. If the radio altimeter loses valid reflected signal, fails internal monitoring or cannot provide reliable height data, the status output allows the crew to understand that the indication should not be trusted until the system is checked. These outputs are especially important during approach, landing and low-altitude flight.
The RV-5MD1 system can support altitude range capabilities of 0–300 m, 0–750 m or 0–1000 m when used with a matched indicator and system configuration. The PP-5MD1 works in the 4200–4400 MHz frequency range and provides pulse outputs associated with 10–700 m and 10–1000 m ranges. Before replacement or supply, the transceiver should be matched with the correct indicator, antenna set, cabling and aircraft installation requirements.
For procurement, the full designation PP-5MD1 should be used. Alternative names such as PP5MD1, RV-5MD1 transceiver or 5MD1 TxRx unit can help identify the item in correspondence, but the exact designation should remain the main reference. Before supply, it is important to confirm condition, documentation, connector compatibility, mounting frame availability, associated indicator type, antenna set and required altitude range configuration.
