Description

M45110-1 receiving module in radio altimeter equipment

The M45110-1 is a microwave receiving module designed for airborne radio altimeter systems. It works in the radio-frequency and microwave section of the equipment and receives the microwave signal reflected from the surface below the aircraft. The module is not a complete radio altimeter and does not display altitude by itself. Its role is to receive, convert and pass the signal further into the processing chain, where the radio altimeter determines true aircraft height above ground or water.

M45110-1 in the A-037 radio altimeter

The M45110-1 module is included in the radio component set of the A-037 radio altimeter. It is used in A-037-1A, A-037-1V and A-037-1G equipment configurations, depending on the installed system version. In the A-037 system, the module receives the reflected microwave signal from the antenna path and transfers it to the following signal-processing stages. Because it works inside the receiver channel, its condition directly affects sensitivity, stability of indication and the ability of the radio altimeter to detect surface return.

Use of M45110-1 in PP-5M receiver equipment

In addition to A-037 radio altimeter applications, the M45110-1 is also used in the PP-5M receiver. In this equipment, it operates as part of the microwave signal path and performs receiving functions related to the processing of SHF signals. For supply or repair, the exact installation should be confirmed by the equipment documentation. The same module designation may be associated with different radio-altimeter or receiver assemblies, so compatibility should not be assumed only by visual appearance.

Receiving and frequency conversion function

The M45110-1 operates as a high-frequency receiving head in the microwave path. In a continuous-wave FM radio altimeter, the module works together with a transmitting module such as M51102-1 or M45203, depending on the configuration. The reflected signal from the receiving antenna and the reference signal from the transmitter are applied to the internal mixer. The module then forms the difference, or beat-frequency, signal. This low-frequency signal is proportional to the current flight height and is passed to the next stages of the radio altimeter.

M45110-1 and the low-frequency signal path

The beat-frequency signal is taken from the low-frequency output of the module and is routed to an external matching transformer in the radio altimeter block. The transformer input must provide the required DC path for the mixer circuit, because the operating mode of the internal balanced diodes depends on it. After the matching transformer, the signal is passed to the preliminary low-noise low-frequency amplifier section. This means the M45110-1 should always be checked as part of the complete receiver path, not separately from the connected matching and amplification circuits.

Construction of the M45110-1 module

The M45110-1 is manufactured in a shielded metal housing and is equipped with coaxial microwave connectors for RF signal input and output, as well as electrical connectors for power and control circuits. The shielded housing protects the microwave section from external electromagnetic interference and helps maintain stable receiver characteristics. The module should not be opened or disassembled in field conditions, because disturbing the microwave assembly can affect noise figure, balance of the mixer and overall receiver performance.

Handling and service notes for M45110-1

The internal microwave diodes of the M45110-1 are sensitive to electrostatic discharge. Installation, inspection and bench work should therefore be performed using proper ESD protection, including grounding and antistatic handling procedures. During maintenance, the module should be checked for connector condition, shielding integrity, physical damage, contamination, corrosion, test results and compliance with passport data. If the radio altimeter gives unstable readings, loses surface return or fails TEST, the M45110-1 should be checked together with the transmitting module, antennas, matching transformer and receiver amplifier section.
