The RPM-70 is an airborne marker beacon receiver used as part of the Kurs MP-70 navigation and landing system. It receives signals from ground-based marker beacons installed along the approach path and gives the crew an indication when the aircraft passes over these points. The receiver is not a standalone landing system. It works as one component in the onboard radio navigation suite, helping the crew confirm position during approach and landing by using marker beacon signals.
During an instrument approach, marker beacons transmit on a fixed frequency and use different modulation tones for specific approach points. The RPM-70 detects these signals and sends the corresponding information to the aircraft indication and audio circuits. The crew receives both headset audio and cockpit visual indication. This is useful because the marker signal gives a clear confirmation that the aircraft is passing a defined point on the approach path, such as outer, middle or inner marker position, depending on the installed airport system.
The RPM-70 supports approach operations by adding marker beacon information to the navigation and landing picture available to the crew. It does not calculate glide path or localizer deviation, and it does not control the aircraft. Its role is more specific: to identify passage over marker beacon zones and provide a signal that can be recognized quickly in the cockpit. In older and mixed navigation environments, this remains important where marker beacon equipment is part of the landing procedure or aircraft system architecture.
In the Kurs MP-70 system, the RPM-70 works together with onboard indication circuits, mode selection equipment and other radio navigation units. It may interact with the common mode selector of the Kurs MP-70 complex, depending on aircraft wiring and configuration. During troubleshooting, marker beacon indication problems should not be assigned to the receiver alone without checking antenna circuits, wiring, annunciators, headset audio paths and mode selector connections. The receiver is one part of the full signal chain.
