AS-1 automatic matching unit in aircraft control systems

The AS-1 automatic matching unit is an aircraft automatic-control component used in systems where gyro-unit signals must be matched, amplified and transmitted through selsyn tracking circuits. The unit is designed to support the correct operation of the tracking chain between the gyro unit selsyn transmitter and the correction mechanism selsyn receiver. It is not a cockpit indicator or pilot-operated control panel. Its work is internal to the automatic control system, where signal matching and correction control are required.

Starting mode support by the AS-1 unit

One of the AS-1 functions is to support the system starting mode. During start-up, the related control system must bring its internal tracking and correction elements into a stable operating condition. The AS-1 helps manage this process by participating in the matching and signal-control sequence. This is important for systems where a gyro unit, correction mechanism and associated electrical circuits must be synchronized before normal operation. A faulty matching unit may affect system readiness or create unstable behavior during initial operation.

Fast matching speed control

The AS-1 unit is also used to enable and disable fast matching speed when switching operating modes of the system. Fast matching is needed when the system changes state and the correction mechanism must quickly align with the required position or signal condition. After the transient process, the system can return to its normal tracking behavior. The AS-1 therefore helps manage the transition between operating modes and supports stable signal matching without leaving the control loop in an uncontrolled or delayed state.

Correction cut-off function

Another function of the AS-1 is to turn off correction by a signal received from the correction switch. This allows the system to interrupt or disable correction when required by the operating logic. In automatic control systems, correction must not always remain active under every condition. A controlled cut-off helps prevent unwanted correction commands and allows the system to change operating mode safely. The AS-1 performs this function as part of the electrical control chain, not as a standalone switching device.

Signal amplification in the selsyn tracking circuit

The AS-1 amplifies signals in the tracking system between the selsyn transmitter of the gyro unit and the selsyn receiver of the correction mechanism. In such circuits, reliable signal transfer is important because the correction mechanism depends on accurate positional information. If the signal is weak, distorted or unstable, the receiving part of the system may not follow the required position correctly. The AS-1 helps maintain the necessary signal level and supports proper operation of the tracking chain.
