artificial horizon

The AGB-96R is a gyroscopic artificial horizon used in flight and navigation instrument systems of Mi-8 family helicopters. It provides the crew with a visual reference of the helicopter’s spatial position relative to the natural horizon. The instrument indicates roll, pitch and lateral slip, which are essential parameters for attitude control during manual flight, instrument flight and operation in reduced visibility. Installed on the cockpit instrument panel, the AGB-96R forms part of the standard attitude indication equipment used by the pilot during continuous flight operation.
The AGB-96R displays roll and pitch angles in a direct cockpit-readable format. Roll indication allows the crew to monitor bank angle through the full roll range, while pitch indication shows nose-up and nose-down movement relative to the horizon. Lateral slip indication helps assess whether the helicopter is flying in a coordinated condition. For helicopters such as Mi-8, Mi-17, Mi-171 and Mi-172, this information is especially important during turns, hover transitions, climb, descent and flight without a reliable outside visual horizon.
In addition to cockpit indication, the AGB-96R generates proportional electrical signals related to roll and pitch. These signals can be used by external onboard systems, including automatic control equipment and other connected avionics. This makes the unit not only an indicating instrument, but also a signal source for attitude-related data. If the aircraft configuration uses these outputs, the instrument should be checked both visually and electrically. Correct pointer movement alone is not always enough to confirm full serviceability of the unit.
The AGB-96R may work together with automatic control and stabilization systems installed on Mi-8 / Mi-17 family helicopters. In this role, it supplies attitude reference information used by downstream equipment for monitoring or control logic. The artificial horizon itself does not command the helicopter controls and does not act as an autopilot. It provides indication and electrical outputs, while the connected systems process those signals according to their own design. Proper installation and correct power supply are therefore important for stable system interaction.
The AGB-96R is installed on an instrument panel inclined forward relative to the vertical. This installation angle is part of the required cockpit layout and helps align the instrument with the pilot’s viewing position. During inspection, technicians normally check the case, glass, display movement, slip indicator, connectors, mounting points, lighting and wiring. Since the unit is a gyroscopic instrument, external condition is only part of the assessment. Warm-up time, stability of indication and electrical output should also be verified before installation.
The AGB-96R operates from aircraft DC and AC electrical networks. DC power is supplied from two independent sources, while AC circuits are used for backlighting and sensor operation. After switch-on, the instrument needs a short warm-up period before it reaches normal operating condition. This warm-up time is specified for normal conditions and for a wider temperature range. The instrument is designed for extended continuous operation, which is important for transport and utility helicopters operating long routes or mission profiles.
The AGB-96R may be supplied as new, from storage, repaired, overhauled or serviceable depending on availability. For aviation use, the technical condition, markings, documentation and compatibility with the required helicopter configuration should be checked before shipment. Technical documentation may be provided on request. When ordering the unit, it is useful to specify the exact designation AGB-96R, aircraft type, required condition and documentation package, since similar AGB-series horizons may differ by version or system interface.
