artificial horizon

The AGB-96D is a gyroscopic artificial horizon used in flight and navigation instrument systems of Mi-8 family helicopters. It gives the crew a visual reference of the helicopter’s position relative to the horizon and supports attitude monitoring during manual and automatic flight. The instrument displays roll, pitch and lateral slip information, helping the crew maintain spatial orientation in normal flight, limited visibility and instrument conditions. It is installed on the cockpit instrument panel and forms part of the standard attitude indication equipment.
The main function of the AGB-96D is to show the aircraft attitude in a clear mechanical-visual format. The roll scale gives bank angle information, while the pitch indication shows nose-up and nose-down attitude relative to the horizon. The instrument also provides lateral slip indication, which helps the crew monitor coordinated flight. For helicopter operation, this is important during turns, hover transitions, climb, descent and flight in poor external visibility, where attitude reference must be stable and easy to read.
In addition to visual indication, the AGB-96D generates proportional electrical signals for roll and pitch. These signals can be transmitted to onboard systems such as automatic control equipment and flight data recording systems. This makes the instrument more than a cockpit display: it also works as a source of attitude-related data for connected avionics. If the electrical output is incorrect, the cockpit indication may still need to be checked together with the connected control and recording circuits, depending on the aircraft configuration.
The AGB-96D may be integrated with automatic control and stabilization systems installed on Mi-8, Mi-17, Mi-171 and Mi-172 helicopters. In this role, the instrument supplies attitude information that can be used by downstream systems for monitoring, stabilization or recording. The artificial horizon does not move helicopter controls directly. It provides attitude indication and output signals, while the connected systems process those signals according to their own logic. Correct installation and calibration are therefore important for both cockpit use and system interaction.
The AGB-96D is mounted on the instrument panel, which is inclined forward relative to the vertical according to the installation requirement. The mounting angle matters because the instrument must align correctly with the cockpit panel and the pilot’s viewing position. During inspection, attention is normally given to the case, glass, display movement, slip indicator, connectors, mounting points, lighting, power supply and warm-up behavior. A unit may look serviceable externally but still require functional checking before installation.
The AGB-96D operates from aircraft DC and AC power sources. DC power is supplied from two independent sources, while AC power is used for backlighting and sensor circuits. After power-up, the instrument requires a short warm-up period before normal operation. Warm-up time can increase under non-standard temperature conditions, so this parameter is important during pre-flight checks and maintenance procedures. The instrument is designed for long continuous operation during extended flights, provided that power supply and operating conditions remain within limits.
The AGB-96D is aviation flight instrument equipment and may be supplied as new, from storage, repaired, overhauled or serviceable depending on availability. For aircraft installation, documentation and technical condition are important. Technical documentation may be provided on request, and the unit should be checked for compatibility with the required helicopter type and onboard system configuration. Before shipment, it is advisable to confirm condition, completeness, markings, test status and the required documentation package.
