temperature regulator
RT-12-6 Series 2 is an aircraft gas temperature regulator used in helicopter engine automatic control systems. The unit limits gas temperature upstream of the compressor turbine and protects the engine from overheating. It works as part of the temperature regulation loop and does not measure temperature for cockpit indication only. Its main role is to process thermocouple signals and generate control action for the fuel control system when the gas temperature approaches the preset limit.
During operation, the regulator receives temperature signals from thermoelectric sensors installed in the engine gas path. When the measured value reaches the control threshold, the unit generates an output command that affects fuel supply through the actuator circuit. This prevents excessive gas temperature and reduces the risk of damage to turbine components. The regulator is especially important during high-power modes, where the engine operates close to its thermal limits.
The regulator works with a thermocouple system, typically using parallel-connected T-102 thermocouples. These sensors provide the temperature input used by the control circuit. The thermocouple chain must be checked as a complete measuring loop, because poor contact, wiring damage or an open thermocouple can affect regulator operation. If temperature limitation is unstable or does not occur at the correct point, the thermocouples, wiring, regulator input circuit and related engine documentation should be checked together.
The unit operates with the IM-47 actuator in the engine fuel control system. When temperature limitation is required, the regulator sends a pulse command to the actuator, which changes fuel metering through the hydromechanical control unit. This creates a closed-loop temperature protection function: thermocouples measure gas temperature, the regulator processes the signal, and the actuator adjusts fuel supply. The regulator may operate alongside electronic engine control equipment used in TV3-117 engine systems.
RT-12-6 Series 2 is used on Mi-8 family helicopters, including Mi-171 and Mi-172, and is associated with TV3-117 engine installations. One regulator is normally used per engine, so twin-engine helicopters require separate units for left and right engine channels. Before ordering, the series, passport data, aircraft type, engine type and installed control system should be checked. The product is also known under alternative designations RT-12-6 Series 2 and РТ-12-6 серия 2.
