Aircraft ignition plug SD-55ANM-T

SD-55ANM-T is an aircraft ceramic spark igniter plug used in ignition systems of gas turbine engines and auxiliary power units. It produces the spark discharge required to ignite the fuel-air mixture during engine start. The plug is installed in the combustion chamber or starting ignition zone, depending on the engine or APU layout. It is not a standalone ignition unit. It works only as part of the complete ignition circuit with an ignition exciter, high-voltage lead, aircraft power supply and engine start controls.

Ignition function of SD-55ANM-T

During start, the ignition system sends a high-voltage pulse to the SD-55ANM-T plug. The discharge appears at the working end of the plug and ignites the fuel-air mixture in the combustion zone. This is required during ground start and may also be used for in-flight relight, depending on the engine system. The plug must operate in a zone exposed to fuel spray, hot gas flow, vibration and pressure changes. For this reason, the condition of the ceramic insulator, electrode area, sealing surface and connector section should be checked before installation.

SD-55ANM-T in APU and gas turbine systems

SD-55ANM-T is used in aircraft gas turbine engine and APU ignition systems. Typical applications include AI-9 and AI-9V auxiliary power units used on Mi-8 and Mi-24 family helicopters. The plug is also associated with S-300M starter engine systems. In these systems it works with ignition equipment, shielded high-voltage wiring and the engine start circuit. The exact installation depends on the aircraft type, engine version and ignition unit fitted on the aircraft.

Construction notes for SD-55ANM-T

SD-55ANM-T belongs to the group of ceramic aircraft ignition plugs. The ceramic body insulates the high-voltage path and supports the spark zone at the firing end. The "T" suffix in the designation is normally used for tropical execution, intended for operation in conditions with increased humidity, temperature variation and biological exposure such as mold. This matters when selecting parts for aircraft operated in humid regions or long storage conditions. The plug should be matched by full marking, not only by the base SD-55 designation.
