The APD-78A is an automatic control unit used in helicopter main engine start systems. Engine start control through APD-78A

During engine start, the APD-78A coordinates the main parts of the start circuit. It commands the related electrical circuits and actuators that belong to the engine starting system. If the sequence does not develop normally, the unit can interrupt the start logic according to its programmed cycle. APD-78A operating modes and maintenance context

The APD-78A is used not only for normal start. It also supports cold rotation and false start modes, depending on the aircraft and engine maintenance procedure. Cold rotation is used when the starter operates without fuel and ignition. False start mode is used when fuel supply may be involved without normal ignition, according to the maintenance instructions for the aircraft type. These modes are useful during servicing, troubleshooting, and preparation of the engine after certain maintenance actions. The exact procedure must always follow the aircraft maintenance manual, because the same unit can be installed on different helicopter types with different cockpit layouts and wiring details.

The APD-78A is associated with helicopters using automated main engine start control, including Mi-8 family helicopters, Mi-17, Mi-171, Mi-26, and Ka-32. In Mi-8 and Mi-17 installations it is linked with the engine start system for TV3-117 type engines and related onboard control panels. On larger or differently configured helicopters, the general function remains the same, but the wiring, relay circuits, cockpit indication, and connected units may differ. For this reason, a unit removed from one airframe should not be treated as a universal replacement without checking the part number and aircraft documentation.
