458MKS Series 2 is an aircraft gyroscopic sensor used as a compact gyro-vertical unit for issuing electrical AC signals proportional to aircraft roll and pitch angles. The unit is used in remote attitude indicator systems such as AGD-1 and AGD-1S, together with cockpit indicators of the 1122A / 1122B type, depending on system configuration. It may also transmit attitude data to onboard recording systems and autopilot channels.
The main function of the 458MKS Series 2 unit is to determine aircraft spatial position relative to the true horizon and transmit roll and pitch data to remote consumers. The gyro sensor is not mounted on the pilot’s instrument panel. It is installed inside the aircraft fuselage in a protected equipment area, while the cockpit receives the output through dedicated indicators. This arrangement allows the sensitive gyro unit to be placed in a stable structural zone and still provide continuous attitude data to the crew and aircraft systems.
The main difference between 458MKS Series 2 and the basic 458M version is the additional critical roll angle signalling function. The unit generates discrete electrical signals when the aircraft reaches specified roll thresholds. According to the source context, these thresholds are ±(15 ±1.5)° and ±(32 ±2)°. These discrete outputs may be used by warning, recording or automatic systems that require fixed roll-angle reference points in addition to continuous roll and pitch signals.
458MKS Series 2 measures roll and pitch angles over a full 360-degree range, except for the structural blind zone near high climb or dive pitch attitudes. The source context indicates a blind zone around 85°–95°, where gimbal alignment limits the mechanical gyro system. The unit uses pendulum correction channels to maintain vertical reference. Transverse and longitudinal correction rates are specified separately, and correction can be disabled within defined acceleration-related angles to reduce false correction during maneuvering or non-stabilized flight.
458MKS Series 2 is installed inside the fuselage in aircraft technical compartments, underfloor spaces, radio bays or protected forward equipment areas, depending on aircraft type. It is mounted on dedicated frames or rigid mounting points tied to fuselage structural members near the aircraft center of gravity where possible. Correct orientation is essential: the longitudinal axis of the unit must align with the aircraft longitudinal axis, the transverse axis with the wing plane, and the base must be installed horizontally according to maintenance documentation.
The 458MKS Series 2 gyro sensor is used on aircraft fitted with AGD-type remote attitude systems and critical roll signalling circuits. Source context indicates application on MiG-21, regional aircraft, Mi-8 helicopters and other Soviet / Russian aircraft depending on configuration. For procurement, the buyer should confirm exact designation, aircraft type, installation system, condition, passport availability, repair certificate and test status. Since 458M, 458MKS and 458MB variants differ by outputs and system role, substitution should be checked through aircraft documentation.
