GS-18MO starter-generator for helicopter engine starting

GS-18MO is a heat-resistant, six-pole DC machine with shunt excitation. It works first as an electric starter to accelerate the compressor rotor of a turboshaft engine and then as a generator supplying the helicopter DC system. The dual function makes the drive, rotation, cooling and switching configuration as important as the nominal electrical rating.

Documented Mi-8 and TV2-117A application

GS-18MO is documented as one of the permitted starter-generator executions for the Mi-8 family equipped with TV2-117A engines. One unit is mounted on the rear accessory-drive cover of each engine and is geared to the compressor rotor. The reviewed documentation describes counter-clockwise rotation when viewed according to the installation reference and a drive ratio of approximately 0.41; these data must be checked against the exact engine manual.

Generator-mode data and onboard operation

The unit family is rated at 28.5 V DC, up to 600 A and 18 kW, with a documented armature-speed range of approximately 4,200–9,000 rpm and continuous generator duty. Some installed TV2-117A documentation limits the generator load in that engine application below the machine nameplate maximum. The aircraft configuration and applicable operating manual therefore take precedence over the family rating.

Starter mode, cooling and associated systems

In starter mode the recorded supply is 30 V with current up to 600 A and an output-shaft speed of about 2,400 rpm within the stated tolerance. Starting power at the shaft is documented up to approximately 26 kW. Cooling is forced by helicopter air supply, with the maintenance description specifying adequate total pressure at the generator inlet. Starting control is associated with the SPZ-15/PSG-15 equipment in the reviewed Mi-8 installation.

Identification and ordering of GS-18MO

GS-18MO must not be selected only by its 18 kW family rating. Confirm the MO suffix, drive, rotation, cooling connection, terminals and engine effectivity. Inspect the housing, drive end, terminal cover, cooling path and nameplate before testing. State the helicopter and engine modification in the enquiry.
