The GP21-3 is an aircraft integrated drive generator used as a main source of stable three-phase AC power. The unit combines a brushless synchronous AC generator and a hydromechanical constant-speed drive in one assembly. This is the reason it is not just called a generator: the drive section is as important as the electrical machine itself. The generator needs a constant rotor speed to produce standard 400 Hz power, while the engine speed changes all the time. GP21-3 solves that problem by keeping the generator shaft at the required speed regardless of normal engine operating changes.

Constant-speed drive function of GP21-3
The hydromechanical drive inside the GP21-3 compensates for changes in engine or accessory gearbox speed. When the engine moves from idle to higher power settings, the input speed to the drive changes, but the generator shaft must stay at the same rotational speed. The differential hydromechanical drive keeps the generator rotor at 12,000 rpm, which gives the aircraft a stable 400 Hz AC source. Without this drive, the frequency of the aircraft electrical network would follow engine speed and the AC system would become unsuitable for normal onboard consumers.
GP21-3 with D-36 and D-436 engine installations
The GP21-3 is used with D-36 and D-436 engine installations on aircraft such as Yak-42, An-72, An-74, An-148 and Be-200, depending on configuration. In these applications, the generator is part of the main aircraft electrical power generation system. It supplies three-phase AC power to onboard buses and works with voltage regulation, protection, current sensing and switching equipment. The exact version, installation interface and connected control equipment must be checked against the aircraft documentation, because GP21-series units may differ by modification and application.
GP21-3 use on MiG-29 aircraft
The GP21-3 / GP-21-03 designation is also associated with MiG-29 aircraft power generation equipment. On the MiG-29, the drive-generator is not mounted directly on the RD-33 engine. It is installed through the aircraft accessory gearbox system, including KSA-2 or KSA-3 arrangements depending on aircraft version. The gearbox receives mechanical power through shafts from the engines and drives the onboard generating equipment. In this installation, two GP-21 drive-generators may be used to provide redundancy for the fighter’s main AC electrical power system.
Generator section and system equipment of GP21-3
In GP21-3 installations, the hydromechanical drive is paired with a brushless synchronous generator, commonly associated with generator type GT30NZhCh12 depending on version. The generator output is controlled by external regulation and protection equipment. Voltage regulators hold the required output voltage, current transformer blocks provide current signals for protection circuits, and generator control units disconnect the source if voltage, frequency or current parameters go outside safe limits. Because of this, a GP21-3 fault must be checked together with the regulator, protection blocks, wiring, oil system and mechanical drive.
Working fluid and cooling of GP21-3
The working fluid in the GP21-3 drive depends on aircraft type and installation documentation. On civil aircraft installations with D-36 or D-436 engines, aviation oils such as IPM-10, Turbonycoil 210A or approved equivalents may be specified. In MiG-29-related installations, AMG-10 hydraulic fluid is commonly associated with the hydromechanical drive system, while cooling can be provided through a fuel-oil heat exchanger arrangement. This difference is important in maintenance and supply: the oil or fluid type should never be selected only from a general GP-21 description.
Inspection and supply of GP21-3
For procurement or repair, the exact designation GP21-3 / GP-21-03 should be stated together with the aircraft or engine application. A unit for An-74 or An-148 logistics is not always treated the same way as a unit intended for MiG-29 system stock. Before installation, the unit should be checked for passport documentation, test results, storage condition, oil circuit cleanliness, shaft condition, connector condition, leakage, generator output and constant-speed drive performance. For aircraft use, documentation and bench-test confirmation matter as much as the external condition of the unit.
