UV-5M true-height indicator

UV-5M is the pointer indicator used with the RV-5M radio altimeter. It displays true geometric height above land or water from the transceiver signal. The confirmed system range is 0–750 m and is intended mainly for takeoff, approach, landing and flight close to terrain.

The indicator does not measure height independently. The radio altimeter transmits a continuous microwave signal, receives the surface reflection and converts the frequency change into distance. UV-5M presents that value to the crew and participates in the preset dangerous-height warning function.

Dangerous-height warning and test function

The pilot positions a dangerous-height index on the scale. When the aircraft passes the selected threshold, the system provides a visual warning and the associated aircraft system can generate an aural alert. A drop-out flag indicates loss of a valid height signal or a radio-altimeter fault.

The built-in test is used before flight to check the indication channel. The documented test reading is 15 ±1.5 m. The result is evaluated together with the flag and warning state; pointer movement by itself does not prove serviceability of every block in the system.

UV-5M in the RV-5M radio altimeter

UV-5M operates in the RV-5M set. Tu-154 technical documentation confirms two indicators on the left and right pilot instrument panels. Quantity and execution for another installation are determined by that aircraft’s documentation. The PP-5M transceiver, antennas, wiring and indicator form one measuring channel. A fault or mismatch in any element can result in missing indication or a displayed warning flag.

The unit is mounted on the pilot instrument panel. Before installation, verify the designation, scale, face, threshold-setting control, connector, mounting and housing condition. The complete check after installation follows the manual for the exact aircraft.

Identification and ordering of UV-5M

An inquiry should state the complete designation, RV-5M execution, aircraft type, required condition and passport requirement. UV-5M, UV-5M-1 and A-034-family indicators are separate positions; a similar function and range do not demonstrate direct replacement.
