A-034-4-8AF export indicator for the A-037 system

The A-034-4-8AF is an export version of the A-034-4-8 pointer-type altitude indicator used with the A-037 radio altimeter system and compatible radio-altimeter sets. The instrument displays true aircraft height above terrain or water on an analog cockpit scale. It is intended for aircraft where the crew needs a clear radio-altitude reference during descent, approach, low-level flight, operation over water or extended low-altitude profiles. The indicator does not generate altitude data by itself; it receives the signal from the radio-altimeter equipment and presents it to the crew.

Export execution of the A-034-4-8AF

The A-034-4-8AF is functionally equivalent to the standard A-034-4-8 indicator. The main difference is the export configuration: the dial, control markings and front-panel interface elements are made in English. This matters for aircraft operated by international crews or delivered under export configurations, where cockpit labeling must match the documentation and operating language of the aircraft. In supply work, this distinction should not be ignored. A standard A-034-4-8 and an A-034-4-8AF may have the same measuring logic, but they are not always the same item for acceptance or cockpit installation.

1000-meter altitude scale on the A-034-4-8AF

The A-034-4-8AF provides altitude indication from 0 to 1000 meters. This makes it suitable not only for very low-altitude monitoring, but also for wider low- and mid-altitude profiles where the crew still needs radio-height awareness. The scale is divided unevenly so that the lower part remains readable without overcrowding the upper range. From 0 to 20 meters, the division is 5 meters. From 20 to 100 meters, it changes to 10 meters. From 100 to 1000 meters, the scale uses 100-meter divisions.

Danger height warning on the A-034-4-8AF

The indicator includes a danger height setting function with a rotary selector and an integrated warning lamp. The crew sets the selected warning height according to the flight task, aircraft procedure or operating conditions. When the aircraft reaches the selected height during descent, the warning lamp activates and draws attention to the hazardous altitude condition. This function is useful because the pilot does not have to constantly compare the pointer with the scale. The warning gives a separate visual cue at the moment when the aircraft approaches the set radio-altitude threshold.

TEST function and blinker flag of A-034-4-8AF

The A-034-4-8AF has a front-panel TEST push button. When the associated radio altimeter system is functioning correctly, pressing TEST drives the pointer to the reference height mark. If the indicator does not respond, or if the system loses valid altitude information, the drop-out blinker flag appears in the display area. The blinker is an important safety feature because it tells the crew that the indication should not be trusted. In troubleshooting, the cause may be in the indicator, radio-altimeter receiver-transmitter, antennas, wiring, power supply or protection circuits.

A-034-4-8AF with A-037 equipment

The A-034-4-8AF interfaces with A-037 radio altimeter equipment, including A-037-1 series transceivers and associated antenna systems. Depending on aircraft configuration, compatible transceiver versions may include A-037-1A, A-037-1B, A-037-1V or A-037-1G. Since the indicator is only the cockpit display element, it should be selected together with the full radio-altimeter configuration installed on the aircraft. A similar-looking A-034-4 indicator may have a different scale, language, warning layout or compatibility requirement.

When ordering the indicator, the full designation A-034-4-8AF should be used. The “AF” suffix is important because it identifies the export version with English markings. It is also useful to specify the base version A-034-4-8, the 0–1000 m scale, the required condition and the target A-037 configuration. Before installation or acceptance, the unit should be checked for pointer movement, scale condition, TEST response, blinker operation, warning lamp function, connector condition, panel mounting and availability of passport or maintenance documentation.
