Altitude Indicator
Available on back-order
The A-034-4-24 is a pointer-type cockpit altitude indicator used in RV-5M and A-037 radio altimeter systems. It displays true aircraft height above ground or water and gives the crew a continuous analog altitude readout in the cockpit. The instrument is intended for low-altitude operation, approach, landing, descent, flight over water and other profiles where the crew needs to monitor the actual clearance below the aircraft. The A-034-4-24 does not measure height independently; it displays altitude data received from the associated radio altimeter equipment.
The A-034-4-24 has a display range from 0 to 700 meters. The scale uses graded resolution, with more detailed divisions in the lower altitude area and wider divisions at higher values. From 0 to 20 meters, the scale division is 2 meters. From 20 to 50 meters, it changes to 5 meters. From 50 to 100 meters, the scale uses 10-meter divisions, and from 100 to 700 meters the divisions increase to 50 meters. This layout makes the indicator practical for cockpit reading, especially during the most critical low-altitude phases.
The indicator includes a hazardous altitude setting function. A combined rotary selector and warning lamp allows the pilot to set the required danger-height threshold directly on the instrument. When the aircraft descends to the selected value, the warning output activates and the yellow “Dangerous Height” triangle indicator illuminates. This gives the crew a clear visual warning without requiring constant manual comparison of the pointer position with the scale. The function is especially useful during descent, approach, low visibility, night flight or operation over water.
The A-034-4-24 has a front-panel TEST push button for checking radio altimeter serviceability. When the system is functioning correctly, pressing TEST moves the pointer to the 15-meter reference indication. If the indicator or the radio altimeter system is not operational, a drop-out blinker flag appears across the dial. This gives the crew and maintenance personnel a clear sign that the displayed altitude should not be trusted until the system is checked. A failed TEST response should be investigated at the system level, not only at the indicator itself.
The A-034-4-24 interfaces with the transceiver units, antennas and cabling that form the complete RV-5M or A-037 radio altimeter system. The radio altimeter measures true height by using reflected radio signals from the surface below the aircraft, while the indicator provides the cockpit display, warning and test functions. If the altitude display becomes unstable, incorrect or unavailable, the cause may be in the indicator, receiver-transmitter unit, antennas, wiring, connectors, power supply or protection circuits. Troubleshooting should therefore be done through the complete installed system.
The A-034-4-24 is associated with RV-5M, RV-5M1 and A-037 radio altimeter variants, depending on aircraft configuration and documentation. Since radio altimeter indicators may look similar externally, compatibility should not be assumed by appearance alone. The exact range, scale division, warning circuit, connector layout and installed radio altimeter version must be checked before supply or replacement. This is important for both civil and military aircraft where instrument-panel compatibility and documentation acceptance can determine whether the part is suitable for installation.
When ordering the A-034-4-24, the full designation should be used together with the required system application: RV-5M, RV-5M1 or A-037. Alternative descriptions such as A034-4-24, 4-24 indicator or RV-5M/A-037 altitude display may help identify the item, but the exact designation remains the main reference. Before installation, the unit should be checked for pointer movement, scale readability, TEST response, blinker operation, warning lamp function, connector condition, storage status and availability of technical passport or maintenance documentation.
