Description
Purpose of 6E5S
The 6E5S is an end-view electronic light indicator, commonly known as a magic-eye tuning tube. It was used in radio receivers and radio stations to show tuning accuracy, and in tape recorders and audio equipment to indicate signal or recording level. The visible sector on the phosphor target changes with the control-grid voltage.

Construction and indication
The glass envelope contains a controlling triode and the indicator section with a common indirectly heated cathode. The green display is observed through the top of the bulb. The tube uses an octal keyed base; heater connections are on pins 2 and 7, the anode on pin 3, control grid on pin 5, target anode on pin 6 and cathode on pin 8. It may operate in any position.
Selection and installation
The 6E5S is selected by its complete marking, octal base wiring and operating circuit. It is not a direct plug-in replacement for the side-view 6E1P. Before installation, compare the target-anode supply, control voltage and mechanical clearance with the equipment documentation.
