The NP-96M is an axial plunger high-pressure hydraulic pump used to convert mechanical rotation of the drive shaft into hydraulic energy of the working fluid flow. In aircraft systems, it serves as a main pressure source for hydraulic circuits that require stable high-pressure oil supply. The pump is intended for aviation hydraulic systems, high-pressure special installations and ground test benches where actuators and hydraulic units must be powered under controlled operating conditions.
The main function of the NP-96M is to deliver hydraulic fluid into the aircraft main hydraulic line at high pressure. The pump provides nominal hydraulic pressure for operating flight controls, landing gear mechanisms, braking systems and other hydraulic consumers. Its delivery is linked to drive shaft speed and working displacement, so the operating output depends on the engine or gearbox drive regime. In service, stable pressure from this pump is essential for predictable operation of the hydraulic system.
The NP-96M belongs to the axial plunger pump group. This construction is used in aircraft where compact size, low mass and high pressure capability are required at the same time. The pump’s plunger group generates pressure by repeated displacement of working fluid inside precision chambers. Because of this, fluid cleanliness, correct inlet pressure and absence of air in the suction line are critical. Contamination, low inlet pressure or incorrect fluid viscosity may cause pressure instability, noise, overheating and accelerated wear of the pumping group.
The NP-96M is mounted on the aircraft engine accessory gearbox or on a remote drive gearbox, depending on aircraft configuration. The pump receives mechanical power from the engine through the drive shaft and is installed by a flange connection. Correct mounting is important: the shaft, splines, flange face, sealing surfaces and hydraulic ports must match the installation. Before installation, the pump should be checked for shaft condition, housing damage, leakage marks, port cleanliness and compatibility with the aircraft hydraulic system documentation.
The NP-96M and related NP-96AM modification are associated with hydraulic systems of Il aircraft, including the Il-96 family and Il-96M-type configurations depending on equipment fit. On Il-96 aircraft, hydraulic power is distributed through several independent systems, with engine-driven hydraulic pumps installed on PS-90A engine accessory gearboxes depending on the aircraft version. This architecture gives the aircraft several independent hydraulic pressure sources and supports redundancy for key systems.
The pressure generated by the NP-96M may be used to operate flight control boosters, elevators, rudders, ailerons, spoilers, airbrakes, flap and slat mechanisms, landing gear extension and retraction, wheel brakes, nose wheel steering and door / hatch actuation systems depending on aircraft layout. On large passenger and transport aircraft, these consumers require significant hydraulic power. A failure or reduced output from the pump may affect several systems at once, so diagnosis should include the pump, hydraulic lines, filters, accumulators, valves and actuators.
Besides aircraft installation, pumps of the NP-96 series may be used on factory or maintenance ground hydraulic stands. In such systems, the pump provides pressure and flow for testing aviation hydraulic units, actuators, valves and system assemblies. Stand use requires correct working fluid, filtration, inlet pressure and overload protection. Because the pump was designed for aviation high-pressure systems, it should be handled as a precision hydraulic unit rather than a general industrial oil pump.
For procurement or replacement, the full designation NP-96M should be used. If the requirement concerns the related NP-96AM modification, this should be stated separately. Before installation, the pump should be inspected for shaft and spline condition, flange surfaces, port threads, sealing areas, body damage, corrosion, storage condition and internal cleanliness. For aircraft use, bench testing is recommended to confirm pressure, delivery, leakage level and stable operation with the specified hydraulic fluid. Passport, repair or test documentation should be confirmed where available.
