Navigation Light
Available on back-order
The BANO-64 is an onboard aircraft navigation light used to mark the outline and direction of movement of airplanes and helicopters. It is part of the external lighting system and is used during night operation, taxiing, parking and flight in reduced visibility. Depending on the side of installation, the unit is fitted with either a red or green glass light filter. The red BANO-64 marks the left side of the aircraft, while the green BANO-64 marks the right side.
The main purpose of the BANO-64 is to help other crews and ground personnel visually determine the aircraft’s position and direction of movement. At night or in poor visibility, the color of the navigation light immediately shows which side of the aircraft is facing the observer. Red indicates the left side, green indicates the right side, and a white light is normally used at the rear. This makes the BANO-64 an important element of aircraft visual orientation and collision-prevention lighting.
On airplanes, BANO-64 lights are usually installed on the left and right wing tips or wing consoles. On helicopters, the lights may be installed on the sides of the forward fuselage, depending on the airframe design. On Mi-8-type helicopters, navigation lights of this class are mounted on the left and right sides of the nose fuselage area, between frame zones specified by the aircraft documentation. The exact position must always be checked by aircraft type, modification and external lighting diagram.
The BANO-64 is supplied and installed according to side and color. The red version is installed on the left side of the aircraft, and the green version is installed on the right side. These two units work as a pair and should not be confused during replacement. When ordering, it is important to specify not only “BANO-64”, but also the required filter color. Installing the wrong color on the wrong side would make the aircraft lighting system incorrect and could mislead observers at night.
The BANO-64 consists of a metal flanged base, a lamp holder and a colored glass filter. The light source is an aircraft incandescent lamp type SMZ-28-28-1 with B15s/17 base. The color is created by the glass filter, not by the lamp itself. Because the unit is installed in exposed aircraft areas, the condition of the filter, contacts, base, lamp holder and mounting points is important. Cracked glass, weak contacts or an incorrect lamp can reduce light output and reliability.
In flight, the BANO-64 helps prevent visual confusion between aircraft by showing their direction and relative position. On the ground, it marks the aircraft contour during taxiing on runways, taxiways and apron areas in darkness. This is useful for pilots, dispatchers, ground crews and other aircraft nearby. Although the unit is simple in construction, its correct operation is important because navigation lights are part of standard aircraft visibility and safety equipment.
For procurement or replacement, the BANO-64 should be specified with the required color: red for the left side or green for the right side. Before installation, the lamp type, voltage, power, base type, filter condition, mounting holes, contacts and housing should be checked. The unit may be supplied new, from storage, repaired or serviceable depending on availability. For aviation use, passport, acceptance or quality documentation should be confirmed where required.
