Description

ST-115A electric starter

ST-115A is a series-wound DC electric starter designed to accelerate a gas-turbine engine during the starting cycle. The documented application is the AI-8 auxiliary gas-turbine unit. The starter turns the engine until turbine operation becomes self-sustaining, then continues to accompany acceleration within the specified speed interval. The full suffix A is part of the product identity and must be checked on the marking and passport.

Starting cycle and connection to the AI-8

Torque is transmitted from the starter to the AI-8 through a ratchet clutch built into the engine accessory-drive column. The published operating description places normal starter accompaniment at 17,500–20,500 rpm. A centrifugal switch interrupts the starter supply, after which the ratchet clutch separates the starter armature from the engine rotor. This arrangement prevents the running turbine from continuing to drive the electric starter. The ST-115A therefore belongs to the starting equipment of an auxiliary power unit, not to the aircraft electrical generators that supply the bus in flight.

Electrical and rotational characteristics

The documented supply range is 16–29.4 V DC. Steady current consumption is no more than 180 A, and the stated steady rotational speed is 9,000 rpm. The permitted load torque at the shaft is no more than 0.15 kgf·m. Maximum speed during accompaniment is 24,000 rpm, while the published centrifugal-switch operating range is 16,500–23,000 rpm. These limits must be read together with the approved starting programme and verified against the passport of the offered unit.

Construction and environmental limits

The ST-115A is described as an enclosed, heat-resistant DC motor with series excitation. Its main assemblies include the housing with field windings, rotor, rear and intermediate covers, brush holder, centrifugal switch and protective casing. Published limits specify operation from −60 to +100 °C, overall dimensions of approximately Ø117 × 214 mm and a mass not exceeding 4.5 kg. Before installation, the housing, flange, end fittings, electrical contact elements, brush assembly and switch mechanism require inspection under the applicable procedure.

Identification, inspection and ordering

Selection is based on the exact ST-115A designation, AI-8 installation documentation, mounting interface, drive engagement, electrical circuit and centrifugal-switch setting. ST-115B and other related starters must not be treated as interchangeable solely because their names or housings are similar. For comparison and catalog navigation, see ST-115B, SGS-30B, SGS-90/360 Series 2 and STV-3TPB. State the required condition, quantity, documentation and nameplate data when requesting a quotation.
