GSR-ST-12/40 is a combined DC machine intended to crank an aircraft engine and, after start, operate as a generator for the onboard network. Documented MiG-29 electrical-system role
A technical study of the MiG-29 electrical system identifies GSR-ST-12/40 as the main 28 V DC source with two 15SCS-45B batteries as reserve sources. In that documented installation the machine operates only in generator mode and the starter function is not used. This aircraft-specific arrangement must not be generalized to every GSR-ST-12/40 application.
Electrical and speed ratings
Published ratings are 12 kW, 28.5 V DC, 400 A and 4,000–9,000 rpm. The excitation-current range is 1.9–15 A, ambient-temperature range is −60 to +60 °C and maximum listed mass is 32 kg. These figures describe the electrical machine; the complete starting circuit and generator protection remain installation-specific.
Brush data and maintenance limits
New brushes are listed as 8 × 20 × 31 mm. The critical brush height is 17 mm; existing service data also record 20 mm as the minimum at a 100-hour maintenance check. Brush movement, spring pressure, commutator condition, bearings, terminals, insulation and cooling paths require inspection under the approved procedure. The limits are not a substitute for a release-to-service decision.
