DME and ARINC interface function

In a compatible installation, distance information originates in the approved DME equipment and is routed through the KDA 689 interface to the aircraft system that accepts the defined ARINC serial data. The adapter provides the electrical and data-format bridge required by that installation. It does not independently measure slant range and cannot replace the DME antenna, interrogator-transceiver, indicator or EFIS display.

A practical signal path is compatible KDME source → KDA 689 serial adapter → approved ARINC data consumer. The exact upstream DME unit, downstream display or processor, bus characteristics and connector pin assignments must be taken from the aircraft wiring diagram and the applicable KDA 689 technical data. Open sources reviewed for this card did not confirm a universal list of compatible receivers or displays. During troubleshooting, technicians should verify source data, bus continuity and the receiving equipment separately before condemning or replacing the adapter.

Electrical data from the identification plate

The authentic identification plate on the photographed unit states a nominal 27.5 VDC supply and a current value of 0.45 A. It also gives a weight of 1.4 lb, approximately 0.64 kg, and identifies TSO C66b and RTCA/DO-160B references. These values are taken directly from the exact 071-1227-01 unit rather than transferred from the similar -00 configuration.

Power wiring, grounding, shielding and circuit protection must follow the approved installation diagram. The 27.5 VDC value describes the adapter supply and should not be confused with lighting voltage or DME transmitter power. Bench testing should include supply-current checks, input and output interface verification, serial-data integrity and inspection for connector damage or evidence of unauthorised modifications.

Remote installation and configuration control

The KDA 689 is designed for remote mounting in the aircraft avionics installation. Its metal enclosure provides mounting flanges and a compact package for placement away from the crew controls. Exact dimensions, orientation, cooling requirements, mounting-hole locations and connector pin assignments were not reliably confirmed in the reviewed open sources and must be taken from the current installation drawing.

Before replacement, compare the full 071-1227-01 designation, serial number, modification marks, electrical rating, connector arrangement and mounting geometry with the installed equipment and purchase order. Do not assume that KDA 688, KDA 692, KDA 697, KDA 699 or another similarly named adapter performs the same conversion. Related adapters serve different equipment paths and are not interchangeable by family resemblance.
